Master of Arts in Education
With an Emphasis on Curriculum and Instruction

Curriculum and Instruction – Elementary or Secondary (initial licensure)
In addition to courses in curriculum theory, this course of study leads to recommendation for initial licensure as an elementary or secondary teacher.

Initial Licensure – Elementary

In order to be recommended for Beginning Licensure to the State Department of Education, the student must complete all the requirements of the program, meeting all of the criteria outlined. Before applying for student teaching, the student must be admitted
to the licensure program and complete a developmental psychology course, a methods course, and 60 hours of documented field work.

Matriculated students who were not accepted into the licensure program when they originally applied to the graduate program must update their Program Plan in consultation with their advisor.

To be recommended for initial licensure, all teacher candidates must meet the following requirements:

A. Candidates for licensure must have an undergraduate degree in the liberal arts or
sciences. Candidates without an undergraduate degree in liberal arts or science
must complete approved courses that will provide them with an equivalent of a
liberal arts major.

B. Candidates must complete their program of studies and graduate from Castleton
State College.

C. All students must have completed a minimum of 14 weeks of supervised student
teaching with a grade of at least “B” in each section of student teaching.

D. All students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 overall.

E. All students must have a grade of “B” or higher in all courses in the education
program.

F. Candidates must exemplify in conduct and attitude the maturity, judgment, ethical
standards, and dedication expected in the teaching profession.

G. Applicants to the graduate program in Education, initial licensure, must earn a passing score (as determined by the State of Vermont) on the Praxis I Preprofessional Skills test in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing or the equivalent (see Table Two)

H. Applicants for elementary student teaching must earn a passing score (as determined by the State of Vermont) on the Praxis II exam, Elementary Education Content Knowledge (0014).

I. Applicants for secondary student teaching must pass one or more Praxis II exams in their content area(s), as determined by the state of Vermont.

J. Candidates must receive a “pass” on the initial licensure portfolio
