Scholarships for Returning Students

Returning students may apply for the scholarships listed below by completing and submitting a scholarship application along with required letter(s) by March 3. These scholarships are awarded by a committee. Other scholarships are awarded by academic departments and others.

Please note: scholarships with ** require multiple or specific letters of recommendation

VIOLA & JOHN AHERN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must have achieved Junior status prior to the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must be a declared major in Music or Art. Must have achieved a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

MARTHA C. ALEXANDER SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient determined by scholarship committee. No specific criteria.

ARAMARK SCHOLARSHIP -Recipient must have achieved Junior or Senior status during the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must have achieved a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Financial need may be considered.

ATHLETIC TRAINING SCHOLARSHIP – Athletic Training major; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; demonstrated need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

BANKNORTH SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must be a Vermont resident with strong financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

CASTLETON BENEFACTORS - Recipient must be currently enrolled at least half-time (6 credits per semester) in an undergraduate program. Must have earned at least thirty credits at Castleton State College. Will have demonstrated a commitment to community involvement/service either on or off campus. Financial need may be a consideration.

RUTH M. BEST SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient will have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. First consideration will be given to applicants who are legal residents of Vermont; demonstrated need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

CASTLETON WOMENS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP – The recipient is usually a non-traditional student who has returned to higher education after raising a family. Financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

CHITTENDEN ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP – Awarded to a Vermont resident college student with strong financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Award year rotates with other VSC institutions.

CLASS OF 1955 SCHOLARSHIP – New 2008. Recipient must meet the following criteria, be a Junior or Senior Education major when the award is used and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipient must be a Vermont resident for the last 4 years and must have graduated from a public Vermont high school. Recipient may only receive this scholarship once.

CLASS OF 1957 SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must have Junior or Senior status by the date of the award, and have a minimum GPA of 2.6. Must be majoring in Education at Castleton State College, is not receiving any other aid, and has not received this scholarship before.

CSC ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must have achieved Senior status by the fall semester, and be enrolled full-time. Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Applicant must have an immediate family member who is an alumni of CSC (parent, grandparent, sibling or spouse).

MARILYN CROSS MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient is a resident of the area served by Castleton Family Health Center. Must be either a Freshman applicant who is ranked in the upper quarter of their High School graduating class, is a Sophomore, Junior or Senior having a 3.0 or higher GPA. All applicants must be in need of financial assistance. If recipient continues as a nursing major and maintains a grade point average of 3.0, the scholarship will be renewed annually.

DOROTHY GILLIGAN DUDLEY SCHOLARSHIP – Education major with GPA of 2.5 or higher. First consideration will be given to Vermont residents with demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

THE MARTHA K. FARMER LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE FELLOWSHIP - This fellowship is awarded to a Junior or Senior student in recognition of exceptional contributions to student leadership and/or community service. Recipients must have GPA of 3.0 or above.

FRIENDS FOR CASTLETON - Recipient must be a Sophomore, Junior or Senior and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Preference will be given to a student who is a Castleton alumnus from the class of 1986 or later, or the family member of a Castleton alumnus from the Class of 1986 or later. Preference will be given to a financially needy student.

WILHELMINA SAVERY GAGNIER & VICTOR GAGNIER - Recipient must be a legal resident of Vermont, with Bennington County residents receiving first consideration. Must have achieved Junior or Senior status prior to the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must be a declared Elementary Education major and have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

GIBBS FAMILY/NELSON LYONS - Recipient must have achieved Junior or Senior status prior to the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must be a declared Elementary Education major and have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

HACKETT, VALINE AND MACDONALD SCHOLARSHIP – Vermont resident with strong financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

KEITH JENNISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must have achieved Junior or Senior status during the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0. Must be a major in Communication or English and possess a significant interest in writing or journalism. Demonstrate financial need, although he/she may or may not be eligible for other forms of financial assistance.

LEONARD A. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP – First consideration given to Education majors who are Vermont residents. Minimum GPA of 3.0.

PER KRISTIANSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Sophomore standing at time of award; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2; demonstrated financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

AGNES LINDSAY TRUST SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must be a rural New England resident (population less than 5000), who is in need of financial assistance to continue his/her college education. Must be in good academic standing in accordance with the College Policy and be enrolled on a full-time basis.

DR. FRANK MORGAN SCHOLARSHIP – Intended to assist a non-traditional, matriculated student who is a Mathematics or Mathematics Education major who is enrolled full-time. ($250 given directly in his name by Dale and Elaine Kreisler in 2006, 2007).

NEW GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP -  Recipients of this $1000 award are Vermont residents who have earned an Associate Degree from CCV or VTC and are continuing on for a Bachelor’s Degree at one of the four Vermont State Colleges. Recipient must have a college transcript on file at the award granting institution and a completed FAFSA, as need must be determined by the Financial Aid Office. This award is renewable for a second academic year as long as the student is making Satisfactory Academic Progress.

BETTY HALE PERRIN SCHOLARSHIP IN NURSING – First consideration given to a Nursing student from Rutland, VT, or a Nursing student from Vermont.

CARRIE COLVIN PERRY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students from Vermont or New York with family members who are Castleton alumni. Students must be in need of financial assistance. If there are no applicants meeting these criteria, the scholarship will be awarded to a financially needy student who resides outside of Vermont or New York.

RUTLAND COUNTY GRAMMAR SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must have achieved Junior or Senior status during the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must have achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be a resident of the State of Vermont for five (5) consecutive years previous to the award year, and be registered to vote.

DERRY P. SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP -Recipient must be a Vermont resident with the potential to become a successful and contributing member of her/his community.

C.V. STARR SCHOLARSHIP - Awarded to a Vermont resident first on the basis of need and then on academic achievement. This scholarship must be used to replace loans or work-study, and not federal or state grants.

STARTING POINT SCHOLARSHIP – Awarded to a first generation college student. Award rotates yearly with other VSC institutions.

THEODORE MANNING STEELE FELLOWSHIP –Recipient must be a declared major in Literature with a minimum GPA of 3.0. This Fellowship is renewable for up to 4 years provided the recipient maintains full time enrollment, a 3.0 GPA and majors in Literature.

THIESER/MANOVILL SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must have achieved Senior status prior to the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must have achieved a minimum 2.75 GPA. Have demonstrated leadership qualities during his/her enrollment at Castleton State College including, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas: Student Life, Community Service, Volunteerism, Academics. Demonstrate need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

VERMONT ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must be a declared Communication major with interest in broadcasting. Must have completed two years of study, and have a minimum GPA of 3.0, Financial need as determined by the Financial Aid office. This scholarship will be awarded to two students, one of whom must be a Vermont resident.

VSC GOLF SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must be a Vermont resident with strong financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

VSC GENERAL ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP – Awarded to a Vermont resident college student with strong financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

PLEASE NOTE: THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARSHIPS WITH “ ** ” REQUIRE
LETTER(S) OF RECOMMENDATION AND/OR APPLICANT ESSAY ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FOLLOWING BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS.

**CLASS OF 1959 SCHOLARSHIP - The recipient must demonstrate financial need, show community/college service through volunteerism and fully intend to seek licensure as a teacher. The recipient must have achieved  Junior or Senior status, and be enrolled full-time during the semesters the scholarship will be received.  The student must be a legal resident of Vermont, however if no Vermont resident is eligible for selection, residents of other states will be eligible. Must have a 3.0 or above GPA and complete a one page essay describing their aspirations to teach.

**CLASS OF 1960 SCHOLARSHIP (NEW 08FA) - Scholarship will be awarded to a Junior or Senior with a GPA of 3.0 or greater and financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Applicant must be declared as seeking education licensure, and show leadership qualities and service to the community and/or college through volunteerism. Applicant must submit an essay (min 250 words) answering one of the following questions: 1. Tell us about a particular individual who has influenced your life and why. 2. Write about a significant moment/achievement in your life and why it was significant. 3. Describe your aspirations upon graduation.

**HUBBARTON FORGE SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must be a non-traditional student, enrolled full-time, and must demonstrate commitment to his/her academic career exemplified by a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

**DOROTHY BEACH BARNOUW SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must be a matriculated student and have earned at least 60 credits by the beginning of the fall award semester. Must submit three (3) letters of recommendation.

**MOLLIE BEATTIE SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must have achieved Junior status during the semester of the award. Must have declared a minor in Environmental Studies, have completed at least 30 hours at Castleton State College, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Must be recommended by a member of the faculty of the Natural Science or History, Geography, Economics or Politics departments. Must be a Vermont resident. However, if there is no eligible VT resident meeting this criteria the scholarship committee will award the scholarship to a non-Vermonter who meets all the other criteria. Preference will be given to any student who plans a career in public or non-profit service in a field related to environmental protection or management and who is also a candidate for a non-Castleton grant, scholarship or fellowship.

**JOHN F. CROSS SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient will be a full time student entering their Junior or Senior year at CSC. They will have resided in Vermont for four years, two of which may be as a CSC student, and recipient will have graduated from a Vermont public or private high school.  GPA of 3.2 or better is required.  Must be enrolled in the Liberal Arts program majoring in Art, Music, Theatre Arts or Literature. Applicant will provide evidence that demonstrates his or her talent publicly. This may include, but is not limited to a musical solo, an art show, a theatrical cutting, a reading of an original work or a dance performance. Requires two letters of recommendation by faculty in the Art, Music, Theatre Arts or Literature Department. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

**WILLIAM H. FEASTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR NATURAL SCIENCES - Recipient must be a financially needy Junior or Senior-level student enrolled as a major in the Natural Sciences. Applicants must have the recommendation of at least two faculty members from the Natural Sciences. The recipient will be determined based on his or her dedication to the Natural Sciences without regard to GPA.

**ROBERT FOREST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - The recipient must be majoring in Education, be a Senior at the time the scholarship is used and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must be recommended by at least two members of the college's Education Department who believe the applicant has the potential to be an outstanding teacher, has demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and learning, has an ability to motivate students, a commitment to the teaching profession, and an understanding of a child development and evolving society. All qualified applicants will be considered, regardless of financial need.

**FORMER NURSING FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must be a Sophomore level Nursing student. The recipient will demonstrate professionalism, outstanding clinical skills, and a commitment to patient advocacy and good humor. Must be recommended by the Nursing Department faculty.

**THOMAS KEITH MEIER SCHOLARSHIP - Recipient must have achieved Senior status prior to the semester of the award and be enrolled on a full-time basis. Must have achieved a 3.0 or above cumulative GPA. Must obtain the recommendation of one of the faculty.

**CHRISTOPHER M. MOQUIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – Recipient must be enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, the recommendation of at least one faculty member from the Criminal Justice Program, and be recognized as a dedicated Criminal Justice student.

**CHRISTOPHER D. SCHNEIDER COMMUNICATION SCHOLARSHIP - Must have achieved at least Junior status prior to the semester of the award. The recipient must be majoring in Communication and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Has demonstrated involvement in extra curricular activities, such as The Spartan, Student Association and campus radio, has been recommended by a faculty member in the Communication Department. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.

**CHRISTOPHER D. SCHNEIDER NURSING SCHOLARSHIP - The recipient must have at least a Sophomore status and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Must be a declared Nursing major and have the recommendation of a Nursing Department faculty member. Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office.
