Literature
Literary study is an absorbing college major. You will read influential works of literature that are by turns challenging, entertaining, disturbing, and insightful. And you will examine the nature of "influence." You will investigate the intricate web of relationships among writer, text, reader, and culture, and you will come to appreciate the fascinating interplay between expression and thought.
Beyond the Classroom
As a literature student, you can be involved in many activities related to your major. Students can write or edit for the campus newspaper, The Spartan. Many students are also active in the Literary Club. Along with faculty, these students help to publish the Vermont Literary Review. The review is published once a year. Work featured in the review includes poetry, fiction, drama, and personal essays from and about New England. The Literary Club also hosts a poetry reading in the spring where students, professors, and administrators join in an evening of reading poetry.
Careers
Literary study prepares you for many careers and pursuits that require lucid writing and provocative thought. Recent graduates have secured positions in publishing, journalism, and education. Others have pursued advanced degrees in writing, literature, theatre, and library science.
