G 1

1. One day a father and his son were involved in a serious automobile accident. The father, who had lost control of his car, was killed instantly. His son survived, although seriously injured. The boy was taken to the nearest hospital where it was discovered he was suffering from internal injuries and needed immediate surgery. A prominent surgeon was available and was rushed to the emergency room to examine the boy. The surgeon, however, was shaken by the sight of the boy. "I can't operate on this boy," the surgeon said, "He is my son."

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT STATEMENT? HIS FATHER IS DEAD. HOW COULD THE BOY BE THE SURGEON'S SON?

2. A census-taker came to a house and asked the person who answered the door how many occupants there were in the house and what their ages were. The person said there were three occupants altogether, and that the product of their ages was 225 and the sum of their ages equaled the house number. The census-taker looked at the house number and replied that the information was insufficient. The person then said, "I am the oldest," after which the census-taker wrote down the correct ages and left.

WHAT WERE THE AGES OF THE PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE?
