Alcohol and Drug Policies

Castleton has strong policies in place regarding the use of alcohol and drugs on campus. The State of Vermont also has strict penalties in place regarding these substances. Those found to be in violation of campus policies and/or Vermont State laws may face disciplinary action and/or legal action.

CAMPUS POLICIES:

The consumption of alcohol by those under the age of 21 is prohibited on campus. Those who are of legal drinking age (21) may consume alcoholic beverages in their room and/or suite.

The College does not allow open containers or the consumption of alcoholic beverages in public (i.e. on college property, roadways, athletic fields or facilities, academic facilities, etc.), except at approved events. Kegs are not allowed on campus, except at approved events.

Legal-aged guests and visitors to residence halls other than their own are limited to bringing a six-pack of 12 ounce beer with them (or the standard alcohol equivalent).

Legal-aged students are limited to one case of 12 ounce beer containers in their own rooms (or the standard alcohol equivalent).

College officials may ask individuals to allow their bags (i.e. backpacks or coolers) to be searched for alcohol. If the individual does not give permission for his or her bag to be searched, he or she must vacate the premises immediately with the bag(s).

Illegal drug use and sale are prohibited. Drug paraphernalia is prohibited as well (i.e. pipes, bongs).

STATE LAWS:

The following Vermont State Laws concern the use of alcohol:

  • Minors who are found to have misrepresented their age, procured, possessed, or consumed liquor must contact the diversion board within 15 days of the offense. The minor must then complete all requirements mandated to him/her by the diversion board. This may include substance abuse screening, education, and counseling, among other requirements. All program fees are the responsibility of the minor. If the minor fails to contact the diversion board within 15 days, or fails to complete the program in full, their license may be suspended for 90 days and the minor is also subject to a $300 fine. VSA 7 Section 656
  • Furnishing alcohol to a minor, or enabling the consumption of alcohol by a minor, is punishable by up to $2000 and/or two years in prison. VSA 7 Section 658
  • Using an invalid ID to purchase alcohol (i.e. fake or borrowed) will cause the offender to lose his or her license for 60 days. Title 23 Section 203
