"Americans are not bound together by a common religion or a common ethnicity.
Instead, our binding heritage is a democratic vision of liberty, equality, and justice."

Identifying A Need
Regrettably, history course requirements have been cut back or eliminated in our schools, yet the need for a strong history curriculum is more important than ever.  An understanding and appreciation of American History prepares students for their role as citizens in our democracy.
Meeting the Challenge
Teaching American History - Developing Master Teachers is a three-year program (2004-2006) of professional development funded by an $825,000 federal grant secured by the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union and Castleton State College.  This exciting project brings together 30 teachers each year, representing 51 elementary and secondary schools in three counties of southwest Vermont.
Building the Future
Our mission is to develop an active network of K-16 educators dedicated to sharing teaching strategies, course content and resources throughout the region and beyond.  This project will have a significant impact and serve as a model for improving the teaching of history statewide.

Visit our resources page to find innovative lesson plans, suggested reading and a list of hundreds of history books purchased through this grant.
