Summer Reading 2007

The Road from Prosperity by Nancy Welch

It is a tradition at Castleton that all first-year students begin their college experience with a "common reading." Your FYS class will discuss the novel on Orientation Weekend, August 24-26. Please come prepared by reading the book carefully and writing an essay. You should send your essay to your FYS instructor at his/her campus address by mid-August.

The Road from Prosperity is collection of short stories by a talented new writer, Nancy Welch. Set mostly in Ohio in the 1970s, these stories focus on growing up at a time when the certainties of the American Dream are vanishing.

We know you will enjoy reading The Road from Prosperity.

Meeting with Nancy Welch

You will have a unique opportunity to meet the author of your summer reading, Nancy Welch, during Orientation Weekend.

Ms. Welch grew up in the Midwest and teaches English at the University of Vermont. She worked as a secretary and a police reporter before entering college and becoming a writer.

Writing Assignment

You will receive a writing assignment from your First Year Seminar (FYS) Professor. Please come prepared by reading the book carefully and writing an essay on the topic your teacher wants you to address. You should send or email your essay to your FYS instructor at his/her campus address by Friday, August 17, unless your individual FYS instructor tells you otherwise..

Writing guidelines

  • Keep  a journal or notes as you read for ready reference and for later discussion in class.
  • When you write, assume that the reader has read the material. Please do not summarize the content, unless your instructor asks you to do so.
  • Use specific examples from the stories to back up your arguments and ideas.
  • Include examples from as many of the stories as possible and/or appropriate in your essay.
