Students of all abiltities have the opportunity to participate in athletics at Castleton. From intramural sports, to our highly competitive NCAA Division III varsity teams, there is a chance for everyone to be involved. At the intramural level students have the opportunity to play with and compete against their peers, in a recreational, organized setting. Club sports give students the chance to represent Castleton in competitions versus other institutions at a sub-varsity level. Castleton's varsity student-athletes represent the school at the highest level of competition, versus the region's top institutions. Whether you want to get in the game and mix it up on the playing field, or stay on the sidelines and cheer on your fellow classmates, Castleton athletics has a spot for you. With 20 varsity sports, full membership in the North Atlantic Conference and associate membership in several other highly competitive conferences, Castleton has committed itself to providing student-athletes with the very best in small college athletics.
Our Mission
As an active participant in Castleton State College’s stated mission, the athletic department will contribute to furthering the school’s mission through varsity, club, recreational and intramural activities. It is through these avenues that the Castleton Athletic Department will reinforce the school mission of academic and personal growth by emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and physical well-being. The Castleton Athletic Department will look to continuously provide dedicated employees who are committed to motivating and educating their student-athletes. The Castleton Athletic Department will provide students and coaches with a safe environment to embrace and promote diversity, equity; and to develop and maintain high ethical standards. The department will implement community service involvement and provide open communication among our student-athletes, staff, and surrounding communities.
National Affiliation
Castleton is affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. This affiliation matches our committment to both undergraduate academic and athletic success. In this division Castleton competes against other colleges who share the same philosophy regarding the importance of being a true student-athlete. Nationwide, there are over 1200 members in all divisions of the NCAA with nearly 400 colleges competing in Division III, including 70 New England Colleges.
Conference Affiliation
Castleton holds full membership with the North Atlantic Conference (NAC); members of the NAC are accredited four-year colleges in New England. The conference sponsors championships and post-season play in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's golf, men's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball. The men's and women's ice hockey teams are affiliated with the very competitive Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III East. The women's lacrosse team competes in the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA), and the alpine skiing teams compete in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA), McBrine Division. All teams, except for skiing and are affiliated with the ECAC which provides successful teams the opportunity to compete in post-season tournaments. Conference tournament champions receive an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III national tournament in men's and women's basketball, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball and women's volleyball. |
