Women's cross country finishes second, men seventh at Pilgrim's Pride Invitational

Henniker, NH-In the season opener for both the men's and women's teams Castleton looked strong at the Pilgrim's Pride Invitational hosted by New England College. The men's team finished seventh out of eight teams, but fourth-seventh place were separated by a mere eight points. One the women's end the Spartans faired better, finishing in second place, three points ahead of the third place team Emanuel.

MEN: Roger Williams University won the men's 8K with a team total of 22. The Hawks placed their five scoring finishers in the top seven and easily cruised to victory. Finishing second was Norwich Univeristy with a team total of 77, Emanuel came in third with a team total of 119. Finishing fourth through seventh were New England College, Green Mountain College, Lasell College and Castleton, with respective scores of 128, 128, 135 and 136. Endicott College rounded out the meet with a team score of 174. Castleton's top finisher was Michael Sullivan (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) in 10th place with a time of 29:39.

WOMEN: Roger Williams University also took the women's race with a team total of 20 points. Once again the Hawks place their five scoring finishers in the top seven. Castleton earned a second place finish with 84 team points, just beating out Emanuel and Endicott who had 87 points apiece. Norwich University finished in fifth place with 104 points, while Green Mountain College ended up sixth with 219. Lasell College and New England College were incomplete. Castleton's Elizabeth Halnon (Blackstone, MA/Blackstone-Millville) finished the shortened course in a time of 18:27 to earn eighth place and lead the Spartans.
