Castleton wins season opener over Eastern Connecticut 2-0

Hoboken, NJ-Castleton broke a scoreless tie with 1:10 remaining in the first half, and dominated play the rest of the way to come away with the win over Eastern Connecticut. Both teams struggled to gain an advantage early on, but Trishia Fellows (Hartland, VT/ Hartford) put a rebound past the goalie with 1:10 to go in the first half and the Spartans never looked back.

After the first goal the Spartans out-shot Eastern Connecticut 13-1 and held the advantage on penalty corners 6-1. Prior to the score shots were even at 3 apiece and the Warriors held a 2-1 advantage on penalty corners. Castleton would get an insurance goal at the 54:19 mark when Tricia Watson (Patterson, NY/JFK Catholic) blasted a shot off the post that was rebounded and sent home by Carrie Black (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg Central).

Earning the win in the cage for Castleton was sophomore, Trisha Clark (East Dover, VT/Brattleboro Union) who recorded one save for her first shutout of the season, and third of her career. Taking the loss for Eastern Connecticut was Mindy Maher (Sherman, CT/Shepaug Valley). The freshman Maher stopped four shots. The game was part of a season opening weekend hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. With the win Castleton goes to 1-0 and will play Juniata College on Sunday, September 3 at Stevens Institute, game time scheduled for 1:00 PM. The loss drops Eastern Connecticut to 0-1. The Warriors are back in action Sunday, September 3 when they take on host, Stevens Institute, at 11:00 AM. [Box Score]
