Castleton improves to 2-1 in NAC with 4-1 victory over Elms
Chicopee, MA - Elms College junior midfielder Ellen
Silva (Palmer, MA) netted her first goal of the season, but Castleton
State College sophomore midfielder Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, VT) scored
three goals to lift the visiting Spartans to a 4-1 win over the Blazers
in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) field hockey game at Leary
Field.
Griggs tallied her team-leading seventh, eighth and ninth goals of the
season, including a pair in the second half for the Spartans, who won
for the second time in their last three games to improve to 4-5 overall,
2-1 NAC. Elms College fell to 0-9 overall, 0-4 NAC.
Griggs opened the scoring on a shot to the right corner that beat Elms
College senior goalkeeper Colleen Strunk (Stoneham, MA).
Freshman forward Bea Thomson (Bennington, VT) netted her first
collegiate goal 11 four minutes into the second half to extend the
Spartans' lead to 2-0.
Silva cut the Blazers' deficit in half with 11:03 remaining off a
penalty corner, but Griggs answered with two more goals over the final
6:08 to close the scoring.
Strunk finished with 19 saves for the Blazers in the loss, while
sophomores Trisha Clark (East Dover, VT) and Jessica Viens (Waterbury, VT) combined for two stops in the victory.
Castleton is back in action on Saturday, October 7 when they play host to University of Maine-Farmington in a 1:00 PM North Atlantic Conference match-up. [Box Score]
