Castleton wins homecoming game 2-1 over St. Joseph's (Me.)
Castleton, VT-After falling behind in the second half 1-0, Castleton came to life and scored a pair of quick goals to earn the win. Heather Brock (Bow, NH/Bow) scored her first career goal, and the Spartan defense kept a hungry St. Joseph's offense at bay in the final minutes to seal the win.
In a very evenly played first half, both teams squandered chances on the wet field, and played 35 minutes of scoreless field hockey. The Spartans fired off five first half shots, but St. Joseph’s goalie, Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME/Georges Valley), was equal to the task, stopping the four that came her way. For the game Sirois stopped 10 shots on goal. The Monks opened the second half with plenty of energy as they were able to slip a goal in seven minutes into the second half. Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME/Hall-Dale) put home her fifth goal of the season off from a perfectly crossed ball from Julie Ostrowski (Albany, NY/Guilderland Central). The Spartans seemed to take some control at this point, and with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game Brock put home the equalizer after Sirois had thwarted several attempts. Just one minute and five second later Heather Loomis (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) inserted a corner that Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, VT/Mt. Abraham Union) blasted home for the game winner. The Monks refused to give up, with a late game flurry that was turned away very nicely by Castleton goal keeper Trisha Clark (East Dover, VT/Brattleboro Union).
Clark stopped six shots on the day as Castleton improves to 3-4. The Spartans return to action Wednesday, September 27 when they travel to North Atlantic Conference foe, Western New England College for a 4:00 PM game. With the loss the Monks drop to 1-4 on the year. St. Joseph’s will travel to Anna Maria College on Wednesday for a 4:00 PM game. [Box Score]
