Castleton ends semester with a bang, routs Southern New Hampshire 10-2
Rutland, VT-Castleton ended the first semester with a 10-2 win over Southern New Hampshire, avenging a 5-0 loss one year ago. With the win Castleton improves to 5-2-2, assuring them of the school record for wins in a season. The Spartans came out early and scored three first period goals, and the Penmen could not recover.
Steve Smiddy opened the scoring for the Spartans less than eight minutes into the game and would tack on another goal and an assist later in the game to lead the way. Ross Carmichael and Eric Curtis rounded out he scoring in the first period, with Curtis’s goal credited as the game winner. Jeff Lazeren gave Castleton a 4-0 cushion in the second period but Southern New Hampshire’s Dominic DiMarzo sent home his eighth goal of the season on the power play to bring the Penmen back to within three. The game would get no closer as Castleton tacked on three more goals in the period as Ryan Bartlett, Joe Huchko and Brent Swanson each scored. Chris Gunn opened the scoring in the third period to cut the score to 7-2, but Castleton would tally three more unanswered by Smiddy, Mike Anderson and Evan Romeo.
Jay Seals earned the win in net, stopping 15 shots. Matt Courchesne took the loss for Southern New Hampshire, while making 15 saves in the first two periods. Carmine Vetrano took over in the third period and stopped two shots. The Spartans will be back in action on January 5 when they travel to Williams College for a 7:00 ECAC East tilt. Southern New Hampshire falls to 6-4 and will also return to the ice on the fifth when they travel to Minnesota-Crookston.
