Head Coach, Alex Todd, began his hockey career in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. There he learned the game and played until his senior year in high school. The summer after high school he left to play one year in the USHL for the Dubuque Fighting Saints in Dubuque, Iowa. After the USHL coach Todd played four years at Union College in the Division I ECAC Hockey League. On the ice, Coach Todd’s accomplishments at Union included the game-winning goal in overtime versus arch rival RPI. Off the ice in his senior year he was voted Assistant Captain by his teammates and was also named “scholar athlete” obtaining a 4.0 GPA.
Upon graduation coach Todd signed a professional contract with the Fresno Falcons in the West Coast Hockey League, (WCHL, now the ECHL). Todd played for the Falcons from 2001-2003. In his rookie campaign Todd picked up where he left off at Union with a stand out rookie season, earning Rookie of the Year honors for the Falcons, as well as being voted onto the league’s “All Rookie Team”. The ideal end of his rookie season came when the Fresno Falcons earned the title of Taylor Cup Champions.
After two more years as a professional one in the WCHL and one year in the CHL, Coach Todd made the decision to hang up his skates, and work on the other side of the bench. Alex’s coaching career began at Utica College in Utica, New York. The Utica College Pioneers are a strong force in the ECAC West, and Coach Todd helped them earn the distinction of ECAC West regular season champions while working primarily with the defensemen.
After a successful first year in college hockey as a coach, Coach Todd began working with USA hockey and its summer development programs. To date, Alex Todd has assisted with USA hockey player development camps in the Central States District, and directed the 2006 Mid America Bantam Camp. Coach Todd has also been involved with the USA Hockey national festivals coaching at select 14’s in 2005, select 17’s in 2006 and the select 16’s in 2007.
In the summer of 2005 coach Todd was named head coach at Castleton, inheriting a young team in search of their first-ever win. In his first season, the team showed promise, going 4-18-3. In Coach Todd’s second year the team continued its improvement with a final record of 17-6-4, getting the school’s first ever national ranking as high as #8 in the country on the USCHO Poll, and winning the school’s first ever playoff game. The team’s success lead to numerous post season honors, including leading the ECAC East with nine players being named to ECAC East All-Academic team.
Heading into the 2007-08 season Coach Todd is looking to improve again. With the core of last year's team returning and another class of talented freshmen, the Spartans will be very competitive in the ECAC East. Castleton is looking to establish themselves further in the league playoffs and maintain their presence on the national stage. |
