Tufts takes consolation of Rutland Herald Invitational, 5-4 over Morrisville State
Rutland, VT-The The Tufts University men’s ice hockey team outlasted Morrisville State 5-4 in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational, hosted by Castleton State College.
Morrisville State’s Rob Sgarbossa broke a scoreless tie just under ten minutes into the second period, sending home his sixth of the season, assisted by Joseph Herman and Brett Quinn. The final 30 minutes of hockey would be much different than the first 30 as each team had multiple opportunities on the attack.
Jumbo, Joe Milo evened the score at one apiece, assisted by Matt Ryder and James Kalec. Mustang captain, Matt Damskov would tack on a pair of power-play goals to push Morrisville State to a 3-1 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the second period. Kurt Hertzog sent home his third goal of the season to bring the Jumbos back to within one prior to the end of the period off a Doug Wilson assist.
In the final frame Tufts appeared rejuvenated as they scored two unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead with under 10 minutes to play on goals by sophomore classmates, Cory Korchin and Matt Ryder. The Mustangs would not go quietly however as they tied the score on Sgarbossa’s second goal of the game 14:18 into the period. The Jumbos would waste little time scoring the game-winner, as 19 seconds later Doug Wilson sent home his second goal of the season off an Evan Crosby assist.
With the win Tufts evens its record at 2-2. James Kalec stopped 18 shots in the win. Morrisville State goalie, Brett Freese stopped 28 shots as the Mustangs fall to 2-10 on the season.
