Castleton falls at Tufts 4-1
Malden, MA-The Castleton State College men’s ice hockey team dropped a 4-1 ECAC East/NESCAC crossover game at Tufts University 4-1. The Spartans held a 1-0 lead before Tufts exploded for four goals in the final period to improve to 6-7-1 (4-4-1 NESCAC).
Kirk Bolduc put Castleton on top 6:14 into the first period off a Stuart Stefan assist. The Spartans continued to pressure Jumbo goalie, James Kalec firing nine more shots in the period, but they could not find the net.
Kalec was equal to the task during the second as well, stopping 13 shots. Jay Seals matched the work of his counterpart, stopping 14 shots over the first 40 minutes of play to maintain Castleton's 1-0 lead.
In the third period the Jumbos broke through for the equalizer 54 seconds in as Cory Korchin scored his fifth of the season. Kurt Hertzog scored the game winner with just over 16 minutes remaining in the game. Greg McCarthy tacked on an insurance goal, and Hertzog sent home an empty-netter for good measure.
Kalex ended the game with 39 saves, while Seals had 20 for the 4-10-1 (2-6-1 ECAC East) Spartans.
Castleton is back in action on January 25 when they play host to Amherst at 7:00 pm. [Box Score]
