Castleton completes afternoon sweep, Men beat Lesley 5-2
Castleton, VT-Castleton received a pair of goals from Gerrit Marino (Waitsfield, VT/Harwood Union) and nine saves from Mike Anthony (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth) to earn a hard fought North Atlantic Conference victory.
Ryan Hahn (Benson, VT/Fair Haven Union) opened the scoring just over three minutes into the contest with his seventh goal of the season. Freshman Steven Monteiro (Shelton, CT) evened the score at one when he struck off from an indirect kick, assisted by Sam Mead (Worthing, England). Play was halted for several minutes due to an injury and when it resumed so did the fast pace. In the 40 th minute Chris Hoagland (Sandy Hook, CT/ Newtown) blasted home a shot from 20 yards out to the far post, assisted by Nick Bellizzi (Skillman, NJ.Montgomery). With just 11 seconds remaining in the first half Jon Vogt (Henniker, NH/John Stark Regional) scored his second goal of the year assisted by Hoagland. The Lynx opened the second half with a goal from Imad Elkatrib (North Quincy, MA) but from then on it was all Castleton. Marino scored his third goal of the season off from a nice sequence started by a Ryan Hahn corner kick. Hahn played the corner to the far post where Jerry DeChance (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) headed a perfect pass to Marino who headed it past Lesley keeper, Michael Jack. Marino would score once more less than a minute later on a breakaway created by Hahn.
Castleton held a distinct 33-15 edge in shots, and Jack was credited with 7 saves, several of which were of the spectacular variety. With the win the Spartans improve to 6-6-1 (3-2-1 NAC) and are back in action on Wednesday, October 11 when they play host to Oneonta State University at 4:00 PM. The Lynx fall to 3-6-1 (2-3-1 NAC) and play at Johnson State College tomorrow at 3:00 PM. [Box Score]
