Castleton falls to Skidmore 3-1 in season finale

Castleton, VT-Skidmore received goals from three different players and held off a late Castleton surge to defeat the Spartans in their final regular season game.

Van Haskell (Needham, MA/Rivers) opened the scoring with his 11 th goal of the season in the 20 th minute of play. Haskell’s goal came unassisted on a perfectly placed shot to the far post, just passed keeper, Kevin Merchant’s (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) outstretched hand. Skidmore held the 1-0 lead until the 62 nd minute when Mark Melly (Farmington, CT/ Farmington) put a headed ball past Merchant off from a direct kick by Alex MacFadyen (Providence, RI/Tabor Academy). Less than four minutes later Ernie Economides (Buzzard’s Bay, MA/Tabor Academy) converted a misplayed ball inside the six yard box into his fifth goal of the year. Castleton would gain some momentum late in the second half, as Kurt Hunt (Newport, VT/North Country Union) scored on a header, assisted by T.J. Mazza’s (Lake George, NY/ Lake George Central) corner kick. The Thoroughbreds turned away several other attacks to maintain their two-goal lead until the final horn.

John Corrideau (Holliston, MA/Rivers) stopped five shots in the win for Skidmore who improved to 14-3-1 overall. Merchant ended the day with four saves, as Castleton fell to 8-10-1. The Thoroughbreds have one more regular season game as they host New Paltz State on Saturday, October 28 at 12:00 PM. Castleton returns to action when they host a North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal match on Saturday versus Mount Ida College. Castleton earned the fourth seed in the eight-team tournament; game time is 2:00 PM. [Box Score]
