St. Michael’s stretches unbeaten streak to five games with 2-1 win at Castleton
Castleton, VT-St. Michael’s College opened the scoring at 16:38 on a perfectly placed 18 yard bullet by Sean Malvey (Sturbridge, MA/Tantasqua Regional) just inside the far post. From that point on the two teams played relatively even soccer, with the Purple Knights holding the edge in both shots (25-12) and corners (8-1).
The rains came in the second half, making the pace of play much quicker and less methodical. A short stoppage of play due to injury gave St. Mike’s an indirect kick from about 45 yards out. Brandon Beaudoin ( Newburyport, MA/ Newburyport) served a perfect ball to Glen Sherman ( Arlington, VT/Arlington Memorial). Sherman headed the ball from just inside the box past a diving Mike Anthony ( Dartmouth, MA/ Dartmouth) at the 74:28 mark. Castleton would pull to within one goal in the 86 th minute when Corey Robbins ( Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) touched an indirect kick inside the penalty box to Chris Hoagland ( Sandy Hook, CT/ Newtown). Hoagland blasted a shot around the wall and past the keeper. A flurry of chances for both sides proved unfruitful for the final four minutes, as the game ended at 2-1.
Tim Williamson ( Wakefield, RI/ Barrington) stopped 2 shots on goal to earn the win for St. Michael’s who go to 3-0-2 with the win. The Purple Knights are back in action on Saturday, September 9 when they play host to Southern Connecticut at 1:00 PM. Castleton’s Ben Colona (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) (3 saves) and Anthony combined for five saves. The Spartans fall to 1-2 and travel to conference foe, Johnson State on Saturday, September 9 for a 1:00 PM game. [Box Score]
