Castleton falls in first round of NCAA Tournament to #10 Rochester

Rochester, NY - The Castleton State College men’s soccer team saw its season come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament 2-0 at the hands of 10th ranked University of Rocherster.

Rochester broke a scoreless tie just 3:46 into the contest when Sean Hantes drove a low shot from the top of the box past Castleton keeper, Mike Anthony into the right corner of the goal.

The teams battled through 67 minutes of scoreless soccer before the Yellowjackets broke through for an insurance goal during the 71st minute of play. Steve Welles was able to get a head onto Phil Proud’s corner kick to give Rochester the final margin of victory.

Anthony stopped three shots as Castleton’s season comes to a close for the second-straight year in the firs round of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans wrap up their season at 11-9-1 overall.

Rochester (14-2-2) will host the winner of the Messiah versus Medaille match-up in the second round of the tournament tomorrow at 6:00 pm. [Box Score]
