(March 5, 2008) -
Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College men’s alpine ski team will travel to Sunday River, Maine to compete in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association’s (USCSA) national championships from March 6 – 8, 2008. In just their fifth season of membership in the USCSA, the Spartans earned their first ever bid with a fifth place overall finish in the Eastern Regional Championships on February 24.
The Spartans were led by William Richard Colt (Hanover, NH), who earned sixth place in the slalom event and fifth place in the giant slalom for a fifth place overall finish. The freshman earned a spot on the USCSA All-Eastern Regional team for his efforts, the first Spartan to ever earn the honor.
The trip to the national championships is just the latest in the recent progression of Castleton skiing from a first-year program in 2004 to earning three-consecutive division championships from 2006-2008. The Spartans earned undefeated McBrine Division championships in 2006 and 2007. This season Castleton made the jump to the more competitive Thompson Division, and took home yet another undefeated division championship. Colt was joined by teammates Gregory Towle (Coventry, RI), Charles Robbins (Mendon, VT), Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT), and Corbin Daino (Hagaman, NY) on the ECSC All-Thompson Division Team.
The USCSA National Championships will be held on Thursday, March 6 and Saturday, March 8. The giant slalom competition kicks off Thursday at 9:30 am, while the slalom will take place on Saturday at 9:30 am. Live timing can be followed on the Castleton skiing website.
