(November 12, 2007) - The Castleton Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams, in collaboration with Castleton’s Exercise Science Club, donated all fundraising and proceeds of the 2007 Alumni Weekend Charity Run held Sunday Sept 30th 2007. In total, $1200 was donated to Running Strong for American Indian Youth.
The team was inspired to donate to the organizationfollowing a campus visit by Billy Mills, the 1964 Olympic gold medalist in the 10,000m run. Mills’ talk was a Castleton Soundings event held in the fall of 2006.
Billy Mills is currently the national spokesperson for the organization which provides many services for Native American youth throughout the country. The donations are used for youth programs, food distribution and nutrition, water well programs, housing assistance, culture and language preservation, and women’s health programs.
