(November 13, 2007) -
The Castleton State College Department of Athletics honored the 2007 fall sports teams at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, November 13. All eight teams were honored for a very successful fall sports season, and team most valuable player awards were given.
The event kicked off with the presentation of the President's Cup for Academic Excellence. This coveted award is given out each season to the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. With an overall g.p.a. of 3.37 the women's cross country team was presented the award, edging out the women's tennis and field hockey teams with 3.19 and 3.05 respectively.
Every Castleton team this fall earned a spot in its respective conference tournament. Five out of the eight teams (Men's and Women's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Men's Soccer, Women's Tennis) earned at least runners-up honors in their respective tournaments, with the men's soccer team earning the conference title. In all, Castleton had 25 athletes represented on North Atlantic Conference all-conference teams, with an impressive 20 earning first-team nods. The Spartans were also well-represented in the coaching ranks. Castleton's Tammy Landon (Field Hockey), John Werner (Men's Soccer) and Chris Chapdelaine (Women's Soccer) were all named NAC Coach-of-the-Year as voted upon by their peers.
Team Most Valuable Player Awards:
Men's Cross Country: Jeffrey Paul. Paul was named most valuable runner for the first time in his career. Just a sophomore, Paul finished second or better for the Spartans in all but one race in which he was third fastest. He paced the Spartan men in four races, including the NAC Championships, at which he was named to the All-NAC First Team.
Women's Cross Country: Katie Snyder. Snyder, running in her final season at Castleton, earned her first most valuable runner award. Snyder was very consistent throughout the season, finishing second or better for Castleton in all 12 races. The senior was the top female Spartan in six of those races. Like Paul, she was awarded for her excellence at the conference championships with a spot on the All-NAC First Team.
Field Hockey: Tricia Watson. For the second consecutive year Watson earned team MVP honors. The junior back was a constant for a Castleton field hockey team that set a program record with 12 wins. Watson's drive earned her a spot on the All-NAC Second Team. She also scored one goal and had two assists, while making one defensive save on the season.
Men's Golf: Bryan Smith. Smith ends his Castleton career with his third consecutive MVP award. This season Smith took home medalist honors in five matches, and finished second in two others. The senior captain took home the ECAC Championship in his final season, and earned a spot on the All-NAC First Team with a fifth place finish at the NAC Championships.
Men's Soccer: Ben Hahn. Hahn earns his first MVP award, after being the Spartans' do-it-all man for most of the season. Hahn saw action at nearly every position on the field as he helped the Spartans to a berth in the NCAA National Tournament. Hahn played in all 22 games, assisting on a pair of goals and earning a spot on the All-NAC First Team.
Women's Soccer: Stefanie Reuter. Reuter wraps her solid career as a Spartan midfielder with her first most valuable player award. The senior center midfielder tallied two goals and two assists in leading her team to the third seed in the NAC Tournament. For her efforts she landed a spot on the All-NAC First Team.
Women's Tennis: Charla Klaas. Klaas earns her first MVP award as a sophomore on the team. Playing in the #1 singles slot for the season Klaas finished an impressive, 8-4 overall. In doubles action, along with teammate Emily Hallett, she went a perfect 10-0 during the regular season, before the duo lost their first match in the conference tournament. Klaas also earned a spot on the All-NAC First Team for singles and doubles.
Women's Volleyball: Jamie Lemieux. In her second season Lemieux earned her second MVP award for the women's volleyball team. Lemieux led the team in kills, aces and blocks while earning honorable mention for the NAC All-Conference Team. [Archive] [Athletics Home]
