Castleton sweeps slalom competition at Ascutney Mountain

Brownsville, VT -Both the men's and women's alpine skiing teams opened their Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference (ECSC) McBrine Division schedules with a bang. The women earned the top spot out of nine teams, while the men were first out of eight squads.

Women: Nicole Kondziela (Bath, PA/Northhampton) led the Castleton charge with her first victory of the season with a two-run time of 1:20.78. Freshman Heather Patterson (Stockton, CA/Lincoln) had an impressive second run to finish the day in second place with a time of 1:23.31. Vassar College's Darcy Bennett rounded out the top three. Castleton's Emma Harvey (Kattskill Bay, NY/Lake George Central), Brenna Nolan (Pittsford, VT/Otter Valley) and Colleen Pruss (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) placed seventh, eighth and ninth respectively. The Spartans total team time of 339.25 seconds was good enough for first place. Marist College (383.39) and Yale University (384.70) rounded out the top three in the nine-team competition.

Men: After an undefeated 2006 ECSC McBrine Division season, the Spartan men started off the 2007 campaign successfully with a victory. Castleton finished with a total team time of 317.35 in front of Yale Univeristy (348.29) and Brandeis University (349.29) in the eight-team race. Sophomore Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT/Burr and Burton) earned his first podium of the season with a time of 1:14.95, good enough for second place on the day. Yale's Brett Andrews finished first with a total two-run time of 1:14.51, while Nick Young of the University of Rhode Island finished in the third spot. Castleton's Jeff Giegler (Danbury, CT/Danbury), Tim Rogers (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) and Corey Gray finished sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively. Sophomores Evan Vomacka (Belmont, NH/Bishop Brady) and Tom D'Erric (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) fished 13th and 15th out of approximately 75 men.
