Castleton finishes strong in Thompson Division debut

Women:

The Castleton State College women's ski team made its debut as a member of the ECSC Thompson Division with a respectable third place finish out of eleven teams. After the first leg of the slalom, which took place on the steep and icy Highline trail at Killington, the lady Spartans were poised to earn the team victory, but a few mistakes in the second run cost the team the win. Northeastern University took the team title with a total team time of 296.75, while Boston University finished second at 298.62. Castleton finished third with a time of 303.59.  Tufts University and Green Mountain College rounded out the top-five.

Individually, Northeastern's Kristen Bonkowski won the race with a total two-run time of 1:32.69. Bonkowski was followed by Boston University's Mollie Zapata and Nicole Fontaine of Tufts University.

Castleton's Kelsey White (Traverse City, MI) finished seventh, while Brenna Nolan (Pittsford, VT) earned eighth. Freshman Stephanie Kopko (Perkiomenville, PA) rounded out the scoring for the Spartans with a 10th place finish. Another freshman, Madalyn Kirbach (Mendon, VT) finished 15th after starting in the back of the pack with a start number of 60.

Men:

The Castleton men's ski team showed its team depth in the first race as a member of the ECSC Thompson Division with a second place team finish out of eleven teams. The men's team struggled from the start as four skiers missed gates while negotiating the steep and icy piste at Killington. Two other Spartan skiers failed to finish their first runs. Despite the difficulties, Castleton exhibited its depth by placing four skiers in the top-13, narrowly missing out on a team victory.

Tufts University's Andrew Benson finished first in the races to lead his team to a first place finish. Benson's teammate Brian Bresee finished third, while Green Mountain College's Michael Weinberg laid down two spectacular runs to claim the silver. Tufts University finished with a total team of 248.91, while the Spartans finished with a time of 256.64 for second place. Third place went to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (364.78), while Boston University just beat out Green Mountain College for fourth 267.05 to 276.32.

Individually for Castleton, freshman Bartholomew Kallgren (Burnham, ME) led the way with a fifth place finish, while junior Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT) was right behind in sixth. Another freshman, Corbin Daino (Hagaman, NY) started the race with bib number 90 and worked his way to an impressive eighth place finish to complete the team scoring for Castleton. Sophomore Greg Towle (Coventry, RI) finished 13th and freshman Justin Garritt (Swan Lake, NY) finished 17th after starting the race with bib number 100.
