Castleton women earn first Thompson victory, men finish second

Women: 
 

After finishing in third place in Saturday's slalom event, the Castleton State College women's ski team rebounded with a team victory in Sunday's slalom over Green Mountain College and eight other teams in ECSC Thompson Division competition.

The lady Spartans' team time of 291.50 was good enough for first ahead of Green Mountain College's team time of 302.39. Northeastern University finished third (307.96), Boston University fourth (308.36) and Tufts University fifth (329.15).

The Spartans were led by sophomores Heather Patterson (Stockton, CA) and Brenna Nolan (Pittsford, VT), who finished sixth (1:35.97) and seventh (1:36.11). For the second consecutive day, freshman Stephanie Kopko (Perkiomenville, PA) completed the team scoring for the Spartans with a tenth (1:39.42) place finish. Boston University's Mollie Zapata finished first with a two-run time of 1:31.02, while Northeastern's Kristen Bonkowski finished second at 1:31.32. Zapata's teammate, Teagan Lukacs rounded out the podium at third with a time of 1:32.83. Castleton also received strong finishes from Lindsey Wiken (Hampden, ME), Madalyn Kirbach (Mendon, VT), Kelsey White (Traverse City, MI) and Ellen Noordzy (Exeter, RI), as they finished 13th, 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively.

The Spartans are back at it this upcoming weekend, as they will compete in two ECSC Thompson Division giant slalom events at Killington.

Men:
 

The Castleton State College men's ski team was narrowly beaten by Boston University in today's slalom event at Killington. Boston University finished with a total team time of 245.17, while the Spartans finished 0.22 second behind with 256.39 for second place. Third place went to Worcester Polytechnic Institution (359.76), while Green Mountain College (267.07) and Tufts University (278.30) finished fourth and fifth out of ten teams.

Andrew Benson of Tufts finished his two runs in 1:21.74, which was good enough for first place, as Boston University's Nicholas Vornle finished second at 1:22.27. Castleton's Charles Robbins (Mendon, VT) finished in the bronze medal position at third with a time of 1:24.36. Robbins' third place result, is the first ECSC Thompson Division podium of the season for the Spartans.

Junior Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT), 17th after today's first run, laid down the second fastest second run to place fifth at 1:25.67. Freshman Corbin Daino (Hagaman, NY) finished the team scoring in seventh with a time of 1:26.36. The Spartans once again showed their team depth, as they placed three more individuals in the top-15, as William Colt (Hanover, NH) finished 11th, Gregory Towle (Coventry, RI) 13th and Justin Garritt (Swan Lake, NY) 14th.

The Spartans are back in action this upcoming weekend, as they will compete in two ECSC Thompson Division giant slalom events at Killington.
