Castleton men sweep giant slalom weekend, women wind up second again

Women:

For the second day in a row, the Castleton State College women's ski team finished second to Boston University in an ECSC Thompson Division giant slalom competition at Killington, VT. The Spartans finished with a total two run time of 272.76, as Heather Patterson (Stockton, CA) led the way for Castleton with a time of 1:29.06 for a season-best fourth place finish. Stephanie Kopko (Perkiomenville, PA) finished ninth at 1:31.52, while Madalyn Kirbach (Mendon, VT) finished tenth at 1:32.21 to complete the team scoring for the Spartans.

Boston University's Mollie Zapata (1:27.49) and Teagan Lukacs (1:28.63) finished first and second to lead their team to a total two run time of 270.09. Green Mountain College finished third at 276.34, while Holy Cross College (294.87) and Tufts University (298.86) finished fourth and fifth. Castleton's Kelsey White (Traverse City, MI) had a good day for the Spartans, as she finished 12th out of 63 women in today's race.

After four divisional races, the Spartans and Boston University are tied for first place in the ECSC Thompson Division, which consists of 11 teams, with 8 points, while Green Mountain College stands in third with 13 points. Individually, Mollie Zapata of Boston University sits on top of the leader board with 59 points, while her teammate Teagan Lukacs is second with 52. Castleton's Heather Patterson is sixth with 34 points and Stephanie Kopko is ninth with 26 points out of nearly 80 competitors in the division.

Men:

For the second consecutive day the Castleton men placed seven skiers in the top-10 on way to a team victory over 10 ECSC Thompson Division teams. Castleton's William Colt (Hanover, NH) completed a perfect weekend, as he claimed his second giant slalom in as many days. Colt's two run time of 1:18.54 was enough to edge out Tufts University's Andrew Benson (1:19.38). As he did on Saturday, sophomore Greg Towle (Coventry, RI) finished third with a time of 1:20.17.

Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT) just missed out on the podium, as he finished fourth to complete the team scoring for the Spartans with a time of 1:20.41. Castleton's Rob Moss (Bray, Co Wicklow, Ireland) finished seventh, as he was closely followed by teammates Corbin Daino (Hagaman, NY) in eighth, Charles Robbins (Mendon, VT) in ninth and Bartholomew Kallgren (Burnham, ME) in tenth. Brian Harvey (Katskill Bay, NY) just missed out on the top-10, as he finished 12th despite being the 90th skier out of the start.

Castleton finished with a total team time of 239.12 ahead of Tufts University's time of 245.16. Boston University finished third with a time of 249.94, while Worcester Polytechnic Institute finished fourth at 259.36. Green Mountain College was fifth at 263.05.

After four ECSC Thompson Division races, Castleton is in first place with 8 points, while Tufts University is in second with 10 points. Boston University (11 points), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (15 points) and Green Mountain College (18 points) are third, fourth and fifth out of the 11 teams in the ECSC Thompson Division. Individually, Tufts University's Andrew Benson leads the standings with 58 points, while Boston University's Nicholas Vornle is second with 45 points. Castleton's Justin Schwartz is third with 43, while teammates Corbin Daino (36 points), William Colt (35 points) and Greg Towle (32 points) are fourth, fifth and sixth. Charles Robbins is tied for eighth with 27 points, while Bartholomew Kallgren is tenth with 23 points out of over 100 racers.
