The Castleton State College women's ski team finished the 2008 ECSC Thompson Division regular season in second place with today's runner-up performance in shortened, one run giant slalom race at Killington. The race was shortened to one run due to thunder and lightning that took place during a heavy snow storm. The women finished behind division champions Boston University 142.01 - 147.92. Finishing third in the team standings was Green Mountain College with a time of 153.94. Nicole Fontaine of Tufts University set the pace with a winning time of 45.54. Second and third went to a pair of Boston University skiers, as Mollie Zapata and Teagan Lukacs clocked times of 45.60 and 46.67. The Spartans were led by sophomore Heather Patterson (Stockton, CA) who finished with a time of 47.66 for fifth place on the day. Two Spartan freshman, Stephanie Kopko (Perkiomenville, PA) and Ellen Noordzy (Exeter, RI) completed the team scoring with times of 49.87 and 50.39 for 10th and 14th. Brenna Nolan (Pittsford, VT) and Kelsey White (Traverse City, MI) finished 15th and 16th for the Spartans with times of 50.41 and 50.50.
For the season, Boston University claimed the ECSC Thompson Division title by winning eight of ten races. Castleton finished second, as the team won one race and finished in the runner-up spot eight times. Northeastern University, also winners of one race, placed third in the standings in front of Green Mountain College. The top four teams from the 11-team field in the division advance the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships, which will be held at Waterville Valley, NH on February 23 and 24. The Spartans will look to improve upon last season's 11th place result. The top five teams at the end of the two-day regional event advance the USCSA National Championships.

Men:
After winning two consecutive ECSC McBrine Division titles in 2006 and 2007, the Castleton State College men's ski team claimed their first ever ECSC Thompson Division crown in their first season of competition the new division. The Spartans did so by winning the final eight races of the regular season, including today's one-run giant slalom event at Killington. The Spartans were led by sophomore, Gregory Towle (Coventry, RI), who finished with a time of 42.35. The victory is the third of Towle's collegiate career. All three wins have come in giant slalom competition. Close behind Towle was freshman William Richard Colt (Hanover, NH), who finished only a tenth of a second away at 42.45. Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT) placed seventh for the Spartans at 43.90, as he finished the team scoring at 128.70. Tufts University's Andrew Benson led his team to a second place showing at 133.92, as he finished third at 43.02. Green Mountain College (136.33) placed third in the team scoring, while Boston University (139.77) was fourth. Freshman Corbin Daino (Hagaman, NY) finished ninth, while fellow freshman Bartholomew Kallgren (Burnham, ME) finished 11th for the Spartans. Castleton's Charles Robbins (Mendon, VT) came close behind in 13th. As he has all season, Justin Garritt (Swan Lake, NY) charged his way from the back of the start order to place far up in 17th. Thomas D'Errico (Shrewsbury, MA) also had a strong day for the Spartans, as he finished 19th out of 97 racers.
For the season, the Spartans claimed the ECSC Thompson Division title with eight consecutive victories to end the season, while Tufts University placed second in the team standings. Boston University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute finished third and fourth. The top four teams in the division advance to the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships at Waterville Valley, NH on February 23 and 24. The Spartans look to improve upon last year's tenth place team finish. The top five teams in the two-day event advance to the USCSA National Championships.
