Castleton sweeps giant slalom competition at UMF Open Carnival
Women's Giant Slalom
The Castleton women's ski team started off the 2008 season with a team victory during day one of the Third Annual UMF Open Carnival. Castleton finished on top with a total team score of 10 points, while the University of Maine-Orono (UMO) finished with 23 points. Green Mountain College finished 3rd, while the host University of Maine-Farmington (UMF) finished 4th.
Individually, Castleton sophomore Brenna Nolan (Pittsford, VT) won her first ever collegiate race by finishing with a two run time of 2:11.93 over UMF's Calle McCartney, who checked in at 2:15.23. Third place went to UMO's Monica Purington. The next three places went to a trio of lady Spartans, as Heather Patterson (Stockton, CA) finished fourth, freshman Stephanie Kopko (Perkiomenville, PA) finished fifth and Lindsey Wiken (Hampden, ME) finished sixth.

Men's Giant Slalom
The Castleton men's ski team began the 2008 season with a team win during the giant slalom portion of the Third Annual UMF Open Carnival at Sugarloaf. The Spartans finished with a total team score of 13, good enough for first place. The host institution, University of Maine-Farmington, finished with 31 points in second place, while Bates College's "B" Team finished third at 46 points. Green Mountain College, the University of Maine-Orono, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
Individually, Castleton sophomore Greg Towle (Coventry, RI) won his second career collegiate race with a total time of 1:58.52 over Farmington's Daniel Rihm, who finished second at 1:58.63. Mitchell Riley from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) finished third with a two run time of 1:58.79. In his first collegiate race, Castleton freshman William Colt (Hanover, NH) narrowly missed the podium, as he finished in fourth place with a time of 1:59.06. Four other Spartan rookies cracked the top-15, as Robert Moss (Bray, Co Wicklow, Ireland) finished eighth, Corbin Daino (Hagaman, NY) finished ninth, Bartholomew Kallgren (Burnham, ME) finished 11th, and Justin Garritt (Swan Lake, NY) finished 15th.
