Castleton men race to sixth place finish in regional slalom, women seventh

Women:
 
The Castleton State College women's ski team had their best-ever finish at today's USCSA Eastern Regional Championship slalom event.  The Spartans finished seventh out of 13 teams, besting last year's 12th place finish.  The Spartans were led by sophomore Heather Patterson (Stockton, CA), who finished 23rd out of 70 competitors in the event.  Patterson was followed by another sophomore, Brenna Nolan (Pittsford, VT), who placed 29th.  Nolan was followed by freshman Stephanie Kopko (Perkiomenville, PA), who finished 32nd to complete the team scoring for the Spartans.  Boston College's Perrie Finsand won the gold in first place, as Allyson Newell of Colby-Sawyer College placed second.  Eliza Hawkins of University of Massachusetts, Amherst placed third.  The Spartans finished behind Colby-Sawyer College (1st), Boston College (2nd), University of Massachusetts, Amherst (3rd), Plymouth State University (4th), Brown University (5th) and Boston University (6th).  Castleton placed in front of University of Maine, Orono (8th), Northeastern University (9th), Springfield College (10th), Green Mountain College (11th), Brandeis University (12th) and Marist College (13th). 
 
The lady Spartans will be back in action on Sunday, as they compete in the giant slalom event of the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships.  The top-five teams at the end of the two day event advance to the USCSA National Championships.

Men:
The Castleton State College men's ski team started off the first day of the USCSA Eastern Regional Championships with a sixth place performance out of 13 teams in slalom action.  The Spartans placed sixth behind University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1st), Plymouth State University (2nd), Colby-Sawyer College (3rd), Boston College (4th) and Babson College (5th), while placing ahead of Boston University (7th), Tufts University (8th), Yale University (9th), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (10th), University of Maine, Farmington (11th), Marist College (12th) and University of Rhode Island (13th).  The Spartans finished just 2.37 second out of the fifth spot and 5.38 seconds out of third.  Castleton was led by freshman William Richard Colt, who placed 6th overall out of 70 men.  Colt was followed by sophomore Gregory Towle (Coventry, RI) and junior Justin Schwartz (Bondville, VT), who placed 17th and 18th to cap the team scoring for the Spartans.  Plymouth State University's Vincent Dinapoli place first, while teammate Jason Hey was third.  Jason Small of University of Massachusetts, Amherst was second in the race. 
 
With a USCSA National Championship berth on the line, the Spartans will try to finish in the top-five overall in the two-day event, as they compete in the giant slalom on Sunday.  The top-five teams at the end of the weekend advance to the championships.
