Castleton sweeps Mount Ida 5-0, 17-3

Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College softball team improved to 16-8 with a sweep of Mount Ida College. The Spartans won the opener 5-0 behind a complete-game effort from Angie Carpenter, and took the nightcap 17-3 in five innings.

In the opener Carpenter tossed seven innings allowing three hits while striking out seven and walking three. Castleton plated a pair of runs in the first inning when senior, Carley Amedore doubled and moved around on a pair of wild pitches. Rachel Hunt walked and scored on an Allison Lamay single after an error in right field.

Mount Ida’s best chance came in the top of the seventh when Adrienne Xenos singled with one out and stole second and third. Samantha Conly walked and on the ensuing bunt attempt Xenos was caught in a run-down and eventually tagged out by shortstop Laura Rogers. Carpenter would retire the next batter on strikes, ending the threat.

Castleton’s Rachel Dunn had a single and scored two runs, while Lindsey McGinness went 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBI to lead the offense.

In the second game Castleton took advantage of nine Mustang walks and pounded out 13 hits en route to the 17-3 mercy-rule win in five innings.

Meg Robitaille pitched all five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out two and waling one.

Freshman, Hilary Bemis led the Spartan offense with two hits, including a three-run homerun to centerfield in the six-run second inning.

Katie Lorenco was 3 for 3 for the Mustangs, scoring one run. Pitcher Kerri Kwasek went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBI as Mount Ida ends their season at 4-28.

Rachel Hunt was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI from the #3 spot in the order. All but one Spartan batter recorded a hit in the game.

Castleton travels to Husson College on Tuesday for a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal match-up. [Game One Box Score] [Game Two Box Score]
