Castleton sweeps past Wheelock, 9-1 and 10-2
Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College softball team swept a doubleheader from Wheelock College 9-1 and 10-2, both shortened by the eight-run mercy rule to five innings
In the opener Meg Robitaille pitched five innings, allowing one earned on four hits while striking out six and walking one.
The Spartans scored three in the first and second innings, two in the third and one in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
In the first, Rachel Dunn smacked an RBI double and Allison Lamay singled home a pair to give the home team the early lead. In the second Castleton sent nine batters to the plate and scored three unearned runs. Rachel Hunt had an RBI double and Carley Amedore followed her with an RBI single for the 6-0 lead. In the two-run third, Robitaille led off with a single and was followed by consecutive doubles from Bibit Marion and Lindsey McGinness. Alicia Zraunig added an RBI sac bunt to stretch the lead to 8-1.
The Wildcats would strike for their lone run in the top of the third when Heather Viger singled home Alycia Laudani who had led off with a walk.
Castleton ended the game when Laura Rogers walked, stole second and was singled home Marie Amaral who had substituted for Rachel Hunt.
In the nightcap, Laura Rogers tossed the complete five innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three.
Rogers helped her own cause with a solo homerun to lead off the four-run third inning, and scored twice more after walking.
Castleton plated 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits to cap off the afternoon.
Rachel Hunt finished the day with three hits and four RBI, while Allison Lamay added three this and three RBI. Alicia Zraunig had a pair of hits and three RBI for Castleton who improves to 14-8 overall.
Wheelock’s Viger had a pair of hits and one RBI to lead the 4-21 Wildcats. Elise Ordile had a pair of doubles and scored one run.
Wheelock will travel to Johnson State for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, while Castleton plays host to Mount Ida beginning at 1:00 pm. [Game One Box Score] [Game Two Box Score]
