Castleton drops a pair in season-opening double header
New London, CT-The Castleton State College softball team opened its season with a pair of non-conference losses in a double header at the Coast Guard Academy, losing the first game 9-2 and dropping the night-cap 12-6.
Game 1: The Spartans broke through for a pair of first inning runs as Alicia Zraunig and Cassie Koehne walked to lead off the game. Rachel Hunt followed with a single to load the bases, and a Brandy White fielder's choice brought home the first Spartan run. The Bears tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, plated one in the third and six earned in the fourth to put the game away.
Hunt led the offense with three singles. Angie Carpenter took the loss, tossing six innings and striking out six.
Game 2: In the nightcap Castleton once again jumped out to a lead, this time plating four in the first inning, taking advantage of four walks and three wild pitches in the inning. Freshmen Tosha Whittemore and Brandy White each singled and scored in the inning. Coast Guard battled back to score three un-earned runs in the bottom of the inning. Castleton held onto the one-run lead until the Bears scored three more on four hits in the bottom of the third, then plated four unearned in the bottom of the fourth to earn the win.
Whittemore had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homerun, and a double to go along with two runs scored and one RBI. Alicia Zraunig also had a pair of hits and one run scored. Whittemore also pitched six innings, allowing five earned runs while stirking out two in the loss.
The Spartans look to get on track March 25 when they play host to Skidmore in a non-conference double header beginning at 3:30 pm. [Game One Box Score] [Game Two Box Score]
