Castleton splits non-conference doubleheader with Green Mountain
Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College softball team split a non-conference twin-bill with cross-town rival Green Mountain College, winning the first game 7-3, but dropping the second 14-5. Both teams move to 4-12 on the season.
Game One: Castleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead after single runs in the first and second innings. Laura Rogers singled and scored on an rbi-single by Laura Emilo in the first. In the second, Annie Hartman singled, stole second and scored on an rbi-single by Hilary Bemis.
Green Mountain answered in the third on a three-run homerun by freshman, Amanda Malkin. Brittany Holden and Katie Jablonski each singled with two outs and came around on Malkin’s long-ball.
Castleton evened the score at 3-3 in the fifth, and put together a four-run sixth inning to earn the win. Bemis doubled and scored on an Allison Lamay rbi-single in the fifth. In the sixth the Spartans received rbi-singles from Rogers, Bemis, Rachel Hunt and Lamay.
Bemis led the Spartans with a 4-for-4 performance, while Lamay collected three hits. Tosha Whittemore pitched the complete game, allowing three earned while striking out five in the win.
Malkin was 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles. Kaitlin Petros took the loss, going the distance and striking out two while allowing seven earned.
Game Two: Green Mountain scored in every inning except the third en route to the 14-5 win. Castleton led 3-2 after the first inning, but the Eagles scored two in the second and three in the fourth and fifth to take 10-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Castleton got two back in the bottom of the fifth, but Green Mountain once again answered with one in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the final margin.
Katie Petros was 4-for-5 including a two-run homerun in the second inning and an rbi-single in the fifth. Brittany Holden was 5-for-5 with a double and three runs scored as the Eagles pounded out 19 hits. Amanda Malkin hit her second homerun of the afternoon; a two-run shot in the seventh, and was 3-for-5.
Holden pitched the complete game for Green Mountain, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and five walks, while striking out two.
Allison Lamay led the Spartan offense with a 2-for-3 performance, including an rbi-single in the first and an rbi-double in the fifth. Hilary Bemis and Laura Emilo also had two hits apiece, but the Spartans left 10 runners on base.
Laura Rogers started and went four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, while striking out three in the loss.
Castleton is back in action on Saturday, as the Spartans host a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader versus U. Maine-Farmington at 1:00 pm.
Green Mountain travels to Lyndon for a 2:00 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
