Castleton shakes rust off, routs St. Joseph 77-51
Rutland, VT-Castleton won their first game of the second semester, defeating College of St. Joseph (Vt.) 77-51. In their first game since December 9 the Spartans looked a little rusty in the early going, allowing the Fighting Saints open looks in the first half to keep the game within striking distance. At halftime Castleton led 39-30, thanks in large part to the play of senior Jenn Goff. Goff scored 14 of her game-high 22 in the first half. The 5-11 forward also hauled in five rebounds and collected seven steals to lead a quartet of Spartans in double-figures. St. Joseph shot 46% from the field in the first half, but the Spartans turned up the pressure in the second to limit the Saints to just 26%.
Castleton led by as many as 17 in the first half before the Saints went on a run to close out the opening frame. Vicki Guetti led the Saints with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Erica Raiche chipped in 13. Sophomore point guard, Jessica Banks followed Goff in Spartan scoring with 15 points and 5 rebounds, while Carley Amedore canned all three of her 3-point attempts en-route to 14 points. Freshman Laura Cary was the final Spartan in double-figures with 10 points off the bench.
Castleton shot 47% from the field and from beyond the arc for the game. With the win the Spartans improve to 7-2, while St. Joseph falls to 1-14. Castleton returns to action on Tuesday, January 9 when they travel to Norwich University to take on the 10-1 Cadets at 7:00. [Box Score]
