Castleton falls in NAC home-opener to Husson 71-59
Castleton, VT-Castleton lost their second straight contest, 71-59 at the hands of NAC foe, Husson College. The Eagles led for the entire 40 minutes, though Castleton refused to go away quietly. Senior guard, Carley Amedore scored a game-high 25 points, including 14 in the second half, but it was not enough as Husson placed three players in double-digits and forced 17 Spartan turnovers to earn the win. Shelby Pickering scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed nine boards to lead the Eagles.
Husson took a seven point edge into halftime as the Spartans battled through some early foul trouble and kept within striking distance. Castleton would find their deficit balloon to 17 late in the second frame, thanks in large part to the strong play inside from Pickering and Annie McIntosh who tossed in 14 points and hauled in nine rebounds. The Spartans would ride the hot shooting of Amedore, who canned five three-pointers on the night to cut the lead to within five late in the game. Mary Nienow added to the Castleton run in the second half as she buried a pair of three-pointers en route to 13 points. Jodie Merchant added 10 points for the Eagles and Carmen Ballard knocked in six free-throws down the stretch to seal the win.
For the game Husson shot 43% to Castleton’s 30%. Both teams will turn around and play tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM. The Spartans will play host to Maine Maritime Academy, while Husson travels North to Johnson State. Both are North Atlantic Conference tilts.
