Castleton wins third-straight, downs Green Mountain 75-64
Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College women’s basketball team won its third-straight, defeating Green Mountain College 75-64 at Glenbrook Gymnasium. The Spartans placed four players in double-figures, and nine different players scored en route to their 11th win in their last 12 games.
Castleton clung to a 26-24 halftime lead, as sophomore Emma Buckley kept the Eagles close scoring 14 of her game-high 24 in the opening frame. Buckley, the nation’s leader in blocked shots entering the game averaging 5 per contest, blocked 12 shots and hauled in 13 rebounds to finish with a triple-double.
The Spartans raced out of halftime, pushing their lead to as much as 13 before Green Mountain came back to tie the score midway through the half. Castleton’s Mary Nienow fueled a late game run as she canned 4 out of 8 three-point attempts, finishing with 13 points on the game. LeeAnne Ketchen added 13 points (including 10-11 from the foul line), seven rebounds and eight assists for the 17-7 Spartans. Jess Banks also scored 13 points and dished out seven assists, while Erinn O’Rourke had 10 points off the bench.
Brittany Holden added 14 points and five assists, while Christina Chamberlain chipped in 10 for the 15-7 Eagles.
Green Mountain returns to action Wednesday evening with a 5:00 pm tip-off versus Word of Life.
Castleton’s regular season wraps up on Friday, February 22 when the Spartans host Johnson State at 6:00 pm. The Spartans will be taking part in the WBCA’s Think Pink campaign to promote breast cancer awareness. All fans will be admitted free and are encouraged to wear pink. There will be pink t-shirts as well as pink breast cancer awareness bracelets for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. [Box Score]
