Castleton wins sixth straight, 72-38 over Wheelock

Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College women’s basketball team won its sixth-straight and 11th out of its last 12 with a 72-38 win over Wheelock College in North Atlantic Conference action.

The Spartans placed 12 players in the scoring column, led by Laura Cary’s 13 on a perfect 4 for 4 night from the field and 5 for 6 from the free-throw line.

Castleton struggled to find any rhythm in the early going as Wheelock came out and played strong, trailing 33-22 at halftime. Sarah Brown scored 11 points in the opening half en route to a game high 16 points, including four three-pointers.

The 3-14 (1-8 NAC) Wildcats clawed to within eight points, 39-31, before Castleton would end the game on a 33-7 run.

Melissa Verrill followed Cary in the scoring column with 11 points on a 5-5 performance from the field to go along with a game-high five rebounds. Jess Banks scored 10 points (all in the second half) and dished out four assists for the 12-6 (8-1 NAC) Spartans.

The Spartans are back in action Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm when they play host to Bay Path College in NAC action. [Box Score]
