Castleton falls in ECAC New England Championship Quarterfinal, 21-5

Bridgewater, MA – The Castleton State College women's lacrosse fell to Bridgewater State 21-5 in the opening round of the 2007 ECAC Division III New England Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament.

The third seeded Bears (9-6) will now advance to an ECAC semifinal matchup with second seeded Curry College on Friday evening at Curry beginning at 6 PM. Castleton ends its season with a record of 6-7.

Bridgewater put the game away early as the Bears tallied the first 13 goals of the game en route to a 14-1 halftime lead. Senior midfielder Kathryn Sweeney (Norwood, MA) scored 4 of her game-high 5 goals in the opening half including the first three goals of the game. Sweeney finished the day with 8 points as she also dished out 3 assists.

Eight different players scored for the Bears including Sweeney’s five-goal performance. Junior Lauryn Serratore (Norwood, MA) and freshman Katie DeMaio (Pt. Jefferson Station, NY) added 4 goals apiece with DeMaio also picking up an assist. Serratore had a great all around game as she was also credited with 4 draw controls, 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.

Freshman Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) tallied 2 goals, 2 assists, 3 draw controls, 2 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers as she continues to lead the Bears in scoring with 44 goals and 55 points. Senior attack Alicia Spolidoro (Duxbury, MA) also finished with 4 points as she scored a goal and dished out 3 assists.

Junior midfielder Erin Barry (Randolph, VT) and freshman attack Nicole Adams (Rutland, VT) led the way offensively for Castleton as they scored 2 goals apiece. Sophomore keeper Meredith Pope (Montpelier, VT) made 10 saves in the first half alone before giving way to fellow sophomore Francesca Mazzola (Midport, NY). Mazzola, who came on to start the second half, recorded 3 saves. Castleton goalies faced 37 shots in the game as the Spartans were outshot 37 to 11. [Game Stats]
