Castleton falls in overtime, 11-10 to Ramapo

Castleton, VT – The Castleton State College women’s lacrosse team lost 11-10 in overtime to Ramapo College in non-conference action.

The Spartans stumbled out of the blocks on a wet and sloppy field that would only worsen as both teams played through driving wind and rain. Ramapo jumped out to a 5-2 halftime lead and seemed in control after the first 30 minutes. Saranne Weimer and Tara Gray each tallied a pair of goals, and Evey Rutledge sent home one to give the Roadrunners the lead.

In the second half, Castleton came storming back after falling down 6-2 with 25 minutes remaining. The Spartans scored five unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead with nine minutes remaining. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of regulation, and it appeared Castleton had the game won as Stephanie Pearce gave the Spartans a 9-8 lead with three minutes remaining.

Castleton controlled play for the final three minutes, but with under 20 seconds remaining Gray intercepted a pass at midfield and raced towards the goal, scoring with 11 seconds on the clock, forcing the overtime.

The Roadrunners would score in the first three minute session as Sarah Clayton sent home a free position shot. Castleton answered in the second session when Alex Fleck scored unassisted to make it 10-10. With just over one minute remaining, Rutledge would find the net on a free position and send the Roadrunners home with a win.

Fleck led the 4-3 Spartans with three goals and one assist, while Nicole Adams, Nicole Bouchard and Pearce each tallied a pair of goals. Francesca Mazzola had eight saves in the loss.

Ramapo improves to 2-1, and was led by Gray’s three goals and one assist. Weimer ended her day with two in the first half and Rutledge also had two. Megan Tierney stopped seven shots in the win.

Castleton is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Norwich for a 3:00 pm NEWLA match. Ramapo will play Manhattanville tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm. [Game Stats]
