Castleton wins North Atlantic Conference opener at Johnson State 2-1
Johnson, VT-Castleton State College earned their first win of the season over NAC foe, Johnson State College. Both Spartan goals were career firsts, and the team put together a solid defensive effort to take home the win.
Sophomore Heather Slater (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) took a pass from
senior Casey FitzGerald (Bantam, Conn./Litchfield) at the top of the
penalty box and blasted it past JSC freshman goalkeeper Francesca
Delle-Femine (Marstons Mills, Mass./Sturgis Charter) to open the scoring
in the 12th minute.
JSC would knot the game at one when sophomore Staci Cutting (Rochester,
Vt./Rochester) drove a shot that was deflected by a Spartan defender and
looped over goalkeeper Kim Allen (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) in the 20th
minute.
Spartan freshman Samantha Waters (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston
Lake) would complete the scoring in the 35th minute redirecting a
crossing pass from senior Brean Farquharson (Westmoreland, N.H./Keene)
past Delle-Femine.
Delle-Femine would finish with eight saves for the Badgers (1-3-0; 0-1-0
NAC) while Allen stopped five shots for Castleton (1-1-1; 1-0-0 NAC).
Johnson State travels to the College of St. Joseph's (Vt.) on Tuesday,
September 12th at 4:00 pm for their next contest while Castleton will play at Green Mountain College on the same day. [Box Score]
