Castleton wins North Atlantic Conference opener at Johnson State 2-1

Johnson, VT-Castleton State College earned their first win of the season over NAC foe, Johnson State College. Both Spartan goals were career firsts, and the team put together a solid defensive effort to take home the win.

Sophomore Heather Slater (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) took a pass from senior Casey FitzGerald (Bantam, Conn./Litchfield) at the top of the penalty box and blasted it past JSC freshman goalkeeper Francesca Delle-Femine (Marstons Mills, Mass./Sturgis Charter) to open the scoring in the 12th minute.

JSC would knot the game at one when sophomore Staci Cutting (Rochester, Vt./Rochester) drove a shot that was deflected by a Spartan defender and looped over goalkeeper Kim Allen (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) in the 20th minute.

Spartan freshman Samantha Waters (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) would complete the scoring in the 35th minute redirecting a crossing pass from senior Brean Farquharson (Westmoreland, N.H./Keene) past Delle-Femine.

Delle-Femine would finish with eight saves for the Badgers (1-3-0; 0-1-0 NAC) while Allen stopped five shots for Castleton (1-1-1; 1-0-0 NAC).

Johnson State travels to the College of St. Joseph's (Vt.) on Tuesday, September 12th at 4:00 pm for their next contest while Castleton will play at Green Mountain College on the same day. [Box Score]
