Checklist for Instructors

1. Use a multi-format delivery system. Avoid excessive lecturing.

2. Break assignments down into manageable steps with clear goals and deadlines.

3. Create and use handouts frequently.

4. Give all assignments both orally and in written form to avoid confusion.

5. Provide students with “maps” to the course, lesson, and assignments. Examples of maps are detailed syllabus, daily agenda on board, calendar with deadlines, etc.

6. Preview the upcoming lesson, provide frequent opportunities during the lesson to review, provide time to summarize at the end of the lesson, and get students to reflect on their performance. Use advance organizers such as concept maps, venn diagrams, or visual organizers.

7. Encourage students to maintain master notebooks. Provide handouts that are three-hole punched.

8. Encourage students to carry and use planners. Allow time at the end of each class for students to write down their assignments.

9. Emphasize paraphrasing as a key skill. (“Can someone explain or describe what was just said in their own words?”)

10. Make all expectations as direct and explicit as possible. (Where do students need to be? When do they need to be there? What is the deadline for each step of a project? What are the consequences of not meeting expectations?)

11. Utilize different intelligences to reinforce and evaluate lessons (i.e., have students draw, write, vocalize, build, act out).
