In His Own Words

People with learning disabilities face challenges in and outside the classroom. The Disabilities Access Committee asked a student with a specific learning disabilty to share some of the techniques he uses to succeed in college. Michael Morello is a junior majoring in Multidisciplinary Studies with a special interest in history.

"It is not easy being a college student. However, being one with a learning disability makes it even more difficult. Despite this extra burden, it does not mean you will not succeed.

I have been going to college since the fall of 1999. Over that time I have met expectations and have gone beyond my abilities to be the best student I can be. So how have I been able to accomplish this task?

The first important thing I've done is to advocate for myself. It is one thing to know what your LD is, but if you can't advocate for what you need to be successful you're in for a long bumpy ride. Second is having a good attitude. If I didn't have this, I wouldn't have been able to stay in college for as long as I have. Finally, I put my best foot forward everyday into everything I do. This is required for me to keep focused.

It is necessary to put 100% into everything you do. Eventually with hard work and self discipline success will come. I am a clear example of how sucess will come. By practicing all I've said, I've been able in my 3 semesters here at Castleton State College to maintain over a 3.2 GPA."
