Why "Disability?"
Why are we called the Disability Access Committee? Some people have wondered why we use the big D word. It is only a word. Any word can have a negative connotation. Usually the negativity is in the eye of the reader.
DISABILITY
The word disability is a legal term as stated in the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). “Disability” is the term used most often in professional literature and in legal and medical conversations. According to Goodwill Industries, a world leader in supporting people with disabilities, we should “avoid using trendy euphemisms to describe people with disabilities. Expressions such as ‘physically challenged,’ ‘special’ and ‘handi-capable’ are generally regarded by people with disabilities as patronizing.
ACCESS
Our goal is to provide all students with equal access to the resources, programs, services, and facilities they need to succeed at Castleton. Access means opportunity not guaranteed success. We can provide the opportunity but students still need to do the work necessary to succeed.
COMMITTEE
We are a group of people from across the Castleton campus who have an interest in helping all students perform up to their individual potential. The Disability Access Committee doesn't just work with people with permanent disabilities.
REMEMBER - we are all just a second away from being considered a person with a disability. A fall or other accident or many medical conditions can be disabling for various amounts of time and different degrees of severity.
