The Goal of the Emerging Leaders Class of 2007:
"Finding your place."

The Emerging Leaders, Class of 2007, are learning to become leaders. They have the help of Victoria Angis, Assistant Dean of Campus Life, Dennis Proulx, and Judith Carruthers.

"Our biggest event so far was the collection and distribution of care packages to four Castleton Students serving in Iraq.  In the spring semester we will be working on learning about leadership as a concept, exploring individual leadership styles, and developing our plan for our legacy at graduation."
-Dennis Proulx

What is The Emerging Leaders program?
Castleton’s The Emerging Leaders program is a unique leadership development experience which matches a select group of students with an Alumni Mentor. From the spring of our freshman year until graduation we meet periodically. The Emerging Leaders and their Alumni Mentor meet to explore, experience, and engage in discussions about what it means to be a leader.

We learned to work together, learned about ourselves as leaders, learned how to collaborate and share with others who share a common purpose and commitment, and we learned what is means to live a life of an engaged citizen.

  • Art of Leadership
  • Build a foundation of Self knowledge

Each Emerging Leaders class is expected to create and complete a Legacy Project which serves as a growth opportunity. Students leave something behind to improve the Castleton community.

The Emerging Leaders Class of 2007 Legacy Project ~
Our legacy project began as simple surveys to find out why Castleton students and the campus as a whole is mainly inactive on weekends. Our solution was to create a webpage accessible to students to find information and things to do around our area. It would also be our way of making a bridge between Castleton and others around.

(We also want to have some sort of "perk card" so that with the card students can get discounts at area businesses.)

Sincerely,
Ariel Delaney, Jeremy Gibbons,  Kimberly Maines, Lindsay Sullivan

Alumni Mentor: Dennis Proulx

Each Emerging Leader group has a Castleton alumni to facilitate, mentor, and support the group. The class of 2007 is mentored by Dennis Proulx. He is in his third year on the Alumni Board and is currently the Vice-President of the Alumni Board and part of the Class of 1987.

While attending Castleton Dennis was a member of the Student Orientation Staff (SOS), a Resident Director in Adams Hall for a year, and a Resident Assistant in Ellis Hall for a year. In 1986 and 1987 he was awarded the College Service Award and was the "News Director" of WIUV as a student.

Dennis graduated from Castleton with a bachelors of Corporate Communications in 1987. Following Castleton, he attended Colorado State University. He graduated in 1994 with a Master's of Science in Student Affairs in higher Education.

Dennis was the Assistant Director of Admissions at Castleton from 1989 - 1992.  Just prior to Castleton he worked as Director of Campus Life at New England College in Henniker, NH. Before that he was the Associate Dean of Programs at Landmark College in Putney Vermont. He also worked at Rochester Institute of Technology and at Green Mountain College. Three years ago he helped establish the "Friends of Castleton" scholarship. Currently, Dennis is the Director of Residence Life at Castleton.
