B.S. in Communication, Journalism Concentration
Among the graduates of the Journalism Concentration are writers and editors for large and small newspapers and magazines. Journalsim students frequently work on the student newspaper.
All Communication majors must complete:
COM 1040 Media Writing
COM 1220 Introduction to Communication
COM 1211 Television Workshop I
Either COM 2140 Race and Gender in Media OR COM 2260 Mass Media in Society
3 literature credits beyond ENG 205
In their senior year one of the following:
COM 4850 Senior Project
COM 4710 Senior Seminar
COM 4810 Media Internship
In addition, journalism concentrators must filfill the following requirements:
COM 2230 News Gathering and Writing 3 cr.
COM 2270 Newspaper Editing 3 cr.
COM 3010 News Media Ethics and Law 3 cr.
COM 3030 Journalism Genres* 3 cr. (examples: film and art critique, medical writing, op-ed)
COM 3060 Feature Writing 3 cr. 15 cr.
* COM 3030 Journalism Genres may be taken three times for course and program credit.
All Communication majors must then take 15 additional credits from any Communication classes offered other than those required above. All students must complete a total of 48 credits in the major, and complete an 18 or more credit minor or related concentration approved by the faculty advisor and Department Chairperson. The minor may not be within a Communication concentration nor may it include any courses the student applies to the major requirements. Should the major and minor require the same course, a relevant substitution is required in one or the other. |
