B.S. in Communication by Contract

The concentration by contract is designed to provide the students with a coherent body of knowledge
and skills that cut across traditional intra- and interdisciplinary boundaries.

Normally in their sophomore year and always by the end of their junior year COM concentrators by contract, in conjunction with their advisors, will develop a proposal for their course of study. The proposal will be reviewed by the entire department and the academic dean's office and accepted or rejected with suggestions for modification and resubmission. When accepted, the proposal will be filed with the department and the registrar.

All Communication majors must complete:
COM 1040 Media Writing
COM 1220 Introduction to Communication
COM 1211 Television Workshop I
Either COM 244 Race and Gender in Media or COM 286 Mass Media in Society
3 literature credits

In their senior year one of the following:
* COM 4850 Senior Project COM 4710 Seminar in Communication
* COM 4810 Media Internship

In addition a contract will stipulate 30 cr. in major courses, 15 cr. of which must be in COM, designed to provide the student with a coherent educational experience. (Examples: COM students might elect to take a series of CIS courses within an overall course of study designed to provide a coherent understanding of telecommunications. A combination of COM and ART courses might provide a student a career path in graphic arts. A combination of COM and HIS/POS courses could provide a student with a strong background for political journalism. A student looking into graduate work in organizational communication might be best served with an interdisciplinary course of study involving communication and social sciences. There is a need for educators with expertise in media and telecommunications. A COM/EDU or COM/CIS/EDU collaboration might provide education suitable to that area.)

All Communication majors must then take 15 additional credits from any Communication classes and complete an 18 or more credit minor or related concentration,
