Animals:
Rutland County Humane Society - Pittsford, VT
Mission of Organization: To care for homeless animals and build a humane community through education and outreach programs.
Needs: Volunteers for special events, humane education, fund raising, shelter work, and occasional office help. Duties include dog walking, bathing, grooming, and basic training.
Arts and Museums:
Chaffee Art Center - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: Statewide cultural arts center that showcases Vermont and regional artists offers art educational classes and workshops for children and adults and presents innovative and engaging programs that explore the definition of the visual arts.
Needs: Volunteers to work with our staff to help in the office with data entry, coordinating volunteers, art shows- hangings, and possibly teaching.
Computer Entry Clerk: Maintenance of our membership database, special projects.
Front Desk Attendant: Greeting to visitors, answering phones, mailing assistance, gallery preparation, special projects.
Crossroads Art Council - Rutland, VT
Needs: Office Support: filing, copying, assisting with bulk mailing projects, telephone and receptionist duties. 1-2 hours per week, flexible.
Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History - Middlebury, VT
Mission of Organization: The Stewart-Swift Research Center provides access to two centuries of rich primary source materials documenting Addison County history. The Education Program provides learning kits for teachers, educational outreach programs and museum tours for grades K-12.
Needs: A volunteer to create a written inventory of catalogued collections for researchers. The project requires someone with an “inquiring and analytical mind, attention to detail and an interest in locally history and genealogy. The education dept. seeks volunteers to plan and conduct outreach programs and elementary school tours and to develop educational materials for use in classroom settings. Volunteers also wanted to sew 18th and 19th century costumes for students, cleaning and painting, and to sort and catalog historic newspapers.
Moon Brook Art Gallery - Rutland, VT
Needs: Art Gallery Host: Greet public, answer phone, open gallery. 1 day per week for approx. 6 hours.
Paramount Theatre - Rutland, VT
Needs: Administrative Assistant: administrative or box office work that may require answering phones, filing, processing orders, and interact with patrons. Box office is open Tuesday-Friday 1-5pm & Saturday 10am-2pm. Administrative office is open 8am-5pm, Monday – Friday.
Poultney Historical Society - Poultney, VT
Mission of Organization: Preserve and communicate the history of the Poultney area.
Needs: Service Learning Projects/ internships to help develop a strategic plan for a non-profit. Help to create a brochure, expand on previous work for a walking tour, and expand on previous work on driving tour-using GPS. Docent position, and expansion to include training other students to be docents of the museum. Volunteers can learn about museum conservation and exhibits, also help plan special events. Museum is open in the Summer - Memorial day-Labor day.
Slate Valley Museum - Granville, NY
Mission of Organization: Slate Valley history, arts, and culture
Needs: Volunteers to help with admission, front desk, keep attendance. Opportunities for Education majors, help with after school program. Fieldwork also available.
Criminal Justice/Law:
Dismas House - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: Support of released prisoners- transitional housing, aid with reintegration into society, and reconciliation.
Needs: Cooks for the evening meals Monday-Friday. Also need volunteers to help with specific projects like: Fall Phonathon, Spring house cleaning, Barn renovation-carpentry work, Painting, Yard work, “Let’s Have Fun” activities, annual phonathon (in November), and bulk mailings (4-5 times a year). Looking for volunteers to help residents create resumes and teach computer skills. Also offering a Resident-Intern position (staff and office assistance) for a Junior or Senior student for one-semester or one year long commitments. Resident would live with released prisoners in a community setting; $75/week, covers room, board, utilities. Also looking for a student to represent Castleton State College on Student Recruitment Committee: 1 meeting/month.
Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facilities - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: The Vermont Department of Corrections, in partnership with the community, serves and protects the public by offering a continuum of graduated sanctions and risk management services. This is accomplished through a commitment to excellence that promotes continuous improvement, respect for diversity, legal rights, human dignity, and productivity.
Needs: Volunteers in Rec. program, which includes a small weight room, sports, and arts and crafts. In education, volunteer tutors and adjunct teachers are needed in math, reading, foreign languages, and music (such as guitar lessons). Volunteers are also needed to work with residents on life skills (reentry, healthy living, parenting, etc.) and in self-help groups (NA and AA).
A mentoring program is in the making. This program would include a wide variety of recreational activities and would require training.
The Park Street Program - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: A community based residential program serving adolescent males with sexual offending behaviors.
Needs: Mentors for residents. The mentors would focus on helping residents with life skills, for example a mentor could assist a resident by guiding him through the process of getting his driver’s license.
Rutland County State's Attorney - Rutland, VT
Needs: General Office Clerk: Filing, closing files, copying documents and correspondence, delivery of mail and files to and from courts and other state agencies and other general office duties. 2 days a week, flexible hours between 8am – 4:30pm.
Thresholds Decisions - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: Decision making training for persons in correctional facilities.
Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council - Pittsford, VT
Needs: Assistant in interactive TV studio: Assist with operation and training in operation/oversight of the control room.
Video Creation Assistant: Assist with creation of a series of video scenarios to be used in assorted police training programs.
IT Support: Assist with maintenance and oversight of the hardware and software in the computer lab used by students.
Administrative Assistant/Classroom Aide: Records Maintenance, data entry, working in resource center and assist with any clerical duties.

Elderly:
Bridges and Beyond- Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: Provides non-medical assistance to Rutland area residents, of any age, to support independent living and improve quality of life.
Needs: Volunteers needed to assist in providing care for a predominantly elderly clientele. A volunteer may provide transportation, help in running errands, providing respite for a caregiver, or just good company.
Bridges Program Assistant: Assist Bridges Program Coordinator with matching clients with volunteers; entering information into computer database; follow-up calls to clients and volunteers.
Castleton Community Center/Castleton Community Seniors, Inc. - Castleton, VT
Mission of Organization: To enrich the lives of residents of the greater Castleton area, particularly seniors, by providing education, recreation, communication, health and social opportunities. Castleton Community Seniors provides a site for a senior meals program and a senior and disabled transportation program.
Needs: Community Coordinator: Coordinate bulk mailing, newsletter production, press releases, advertising, web site update. Approx. 8 hours per week, on site
Computer and Tech Instructor: Teach seniors word processing, e-mail, basic spreadsheet, use of phone and fax systems. 4 hours per week, Mon or Thurs. 2-4pm.
Program Developer: Arrange speakers, activities, programs from available community resources for senior center. Flexible, Approx. 8 hours per week.
Service Learning Opportunities: Castleton Community Seniors, Inc. (CCSI) invites Castleton State College to engage in an academic learning partnership as part of our “Reach Out” Project. CCSI recently engaged the services of a professional consultant to survey 2,000 residents in our primary service area to obtain data on the organization’s image in the community and level of awareness of CCSI programs and services. The data will be used to launch a marketing campaign, increase our visibility, and build support. The academic learning partnership would involve participation in a presentation on the community survey findings (scheduled for September 12, 2006), representation on a focus group discussion about the findings, and involvement in the development and implementation of a marketing campaign for CCSI.
Development of a website for the Castleton Community Center. Cataloguing photos and documents in archives and creating a written history of the organization.
Eden Park Nursing Home - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: To provide the best possible care for residents.
Needs: Volunteers to help with paperwork, activities such as arts and crafts, music room activities, current events, and cooking. Hours are flexible but some possibilities are Monday evening 6:30-8pm and daytime from 2 – 5:30pm.

Old Homestead Community Center - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: Senior citizens community center.
Needs: Help needed in winterizing homes and shoveling walkways for seniors.
A volunteer is needed to help a 90-year-old woman named Mary play Bingo on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30 PM.
The Meadows - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: An assisted living residence for seniors, The Meadows has an Activities Department that aims to bring meaning to the lives of the residents and to help them to realize how special their lives are.
Needs: Volunteers to run simple activities (e.g. Bingo) on Saturdays.
Dining Room Host or Hostess: one day per week. Escort residents to dining room, ensure that beverages and condiments are placed at each table, help residents throughout the meal, make the Food Service Director aware of any resident complaints or problems. Lunch 12:15-1:15pm, Monday thru Sunday (volunteer will receive a meal). Supper, 5:15-6:30pm every day.
Internet Assistant: Provide individual help to senior citizens in operating the computer, specifically e-mailing and using the internet. ½ to 1 hour sessions, flexible hours throughout the day.
Resident Companion: Spend time visiting residents, share experiences, general interaction with residents in their activities. ½ to 1 hour at convenience of volunteer’s schedule.
Telephone Receptionist: Answer telephone and front desk, distribute messages, greet visitors, visit with residents who are sitting the in the front lounge area. 10-2pm Saturday, or 5:30-8pm weekday evenings.

Green Mountain Club - Waterbury Center, VT
Mission of Organizations: Environmental preservation and protection of the Long Trail system.
Poultney-Mettawee Natural Resources Conservation District - Poultney, VT
Mission of Organization: Natural resources conservation within the Poultney and Mettawee watersheds.
Needs: Volunteers for field projects, internship opportunities and outdoor environmental projects available.
Rutland Natural Resources Conservation District - Rutland, VT
Needs: Researcher: Conduct research on horse owners in Rutland County and record data on spreadsheets using Lotus and Excel. 6-8 hours per week.
Researcher: Phone area high schools and organizations to acquire information they may have on water qualities. Then organize the information that is collected. At least 8 hours per week or more if possible.
The Nature Conservancy - West Haven, VT
Mission of Organization: To provide environmental stewardship to the Southern Lake Champlain Valley. We preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. We work closely with the surrounding community members to achieve this mission. We also try to educate the public about the environment and the issues that affect us in this area.
Needs: Volunteers needed to perform a wide variety of duties: marking preserve boundaries, carpentry, trail maintenance, welding, trash pick up, invasive species control, restoration planting, tree planting, nursery work, data entry, photography, and water quality monitoring.

Mission of Organization: Humanitarian assistance, ethics, and promotion of goodwill and understanding
Needs: Volunteers to help out with special events.

Needs: Agency Assistant: planning special events, imputing computer data, mailing and delivering posters, general assistance as needed. 2 hours a day as available.
Health:
American Cancer Society- Rutland, VT
Needs: Daffodil Days Coordinator Assistant: To take orders and distribute bouquets of daffodils, as a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. Assist coordinator in making contacts with Rutland County businesses. Flexible hours from the end of January to the end of March.
School Health Task Force Associate: Attending Health Fairs, telephoning advocates, setting up a telephone tree for advocates during the legislative year, contacting schools, helping to organize the Great American Smokeout. 4-8 hours per week, Wednesday’s and Fridays.
Kids on the Move - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: Affordable physical therapy for children.
Needs: Volunteers needed to help in office, help with special events, and help with fundraising.
National Alliance for Mental Illness - Vermont
Needs: NAMI will be having its first NAMI Walk this spring. Volunteers are needed to help plan the walk and to participate in it. There will be one walk in Rutland and one in Burlington.

Office Assistant: Sending out cards to terminally ill patients, acknowledge of donors, answering the phone, updating information database, general help in the office. Flexible hours during the week.

Mission of Organization: Community mental health services.
Rutland Regional Medical Center - Rutland, VT
Mission of Organization: To provide superior diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health services in a caring environment to those in the Rutland region and surrounding communities through the strength of our people and technology.
Needs: Volunteers to stain picnic tables and exercise stations on the hospital grounds.
Emergency Department Assistant: Provide support to the Emergency Department by performing errands within the building, changing stretchers between patients and restocking. Requires a once-a-week commitment for the semester; days and times are flexible, but generally after 4pm.
Clerical Assistant: a variety of departments are looking for help with copying materials, collating, filing, taking, and directing phone messages. Hours vary, but all are Mon.-Fri. between 8 and 5pm.
Communications Dept. Assistant: a variety of tasks depending on volunteer interests and skill level, are available in this busy PR Dept. Use creativity to develop display boards or take photographs. Or, use writing skills to assist with editing, preparation of materials. Flexible hours within normal business day.
Information Desk Attendant: Provide information to visitors in the main lobby. Cheerful personality a must. Some evenings and weekends.
Newsletter and Handbook Production: Great opportunity for a student majoring in business or communications. Must be proficient in Microsoft Publisher and have access to a computer. Flexible hours.
Physical Therapy Aide: Preparing treatment rooms, cleaning and returning equipment, some clerical duties. Tuesday and/or Thursday mornings 8-12.
Receptionist and Secretarial Assistant: Physicians office is looking for help with filing, answering the phone, assembling patient charts and photocopying. Knowledge of medical terminology helpful. 6-20 flexible hours per week.
Courier: Run errands and transport patients throughout the hospital. Evenings, during the week, 2 to 6:30 pm, weekends, 12-4pm.

Mission of Organization: Provide emergency assistance for fuel utilities and shelter in addition to a food shelf, financial counseling and referral to other agencies for on going help.

Mission of Organization: Dedicated to the fight against homelessness. To obtain and share knowledge and resources to eradicate homelessness and help provide safe, affordable homes one family and one person at a time.
Needs: Volunteers to help in research methods, social work, and sociological media.
Rutland Housing Authority - Rutland, VT
Mission: Rutland Housing Authority (RHA) is dedicated to creating diverse housing opportunities by building partnerships that support healthy, vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods. RHA values teamwork and the resulting synergies created through effective partnerships. We have two housing sites, Templewood Court and Sheldon Towers, which provide 135 units for the elderly and disabled as well as Forest Park, which provides housing for 74 families. We are committed to providing services to the elderly and disabled to enable successful independent living and successful aging at home.
Needs: Volunteers needed for: mentoring, crafts projects, educational presentations, wellness presentations, administrative assistance (computes, correspondence, etc.), gardening, cooking presentations, and caring for pets.
Service Learning opportunities: Assist in developing and administering an assessment tool for survey to determine unmet needs of residents and then developing programs/activities to fulfill these needs.
Facilitate educational programs (health, nutrition, cooking, exercise, etc.)
Create a newsletter with thoughts and ideas from residents.
Plan and develop a talent show in which children from Forest Park would perform at Sheldon Towers and Templewood Court.
Student nurses to do vitals and provide wellness information at both elderly sites.

Needs: Mentors, tutors (in Math, Reading, and Writing), classroom assistants, advisors, sports officials, and coaches.
Christ the King School - Rutland, VT
Needs: Artist in Classroom: assist students in artistic endeavors, to share their own experience with art and creating art with students in grades K-8. ½ to 1 hour per week during the school day.
Clarendon Elementary School - Clarendon, VT
Mission of Organization: Elementary education K-6
Needs: Clarendon elementary has a need for soccer coaches as well as tutors to assist in the after school homework club.
Currier Memorial School - Danby, VT
Needs: Volunteers are needed for Currier KidZone, a program providing enrichment and recreational activities to K-6 Currier students. Volunteers could work with the following activities: Community Service Club, Spanish Club, Homework Club, Science Club, Literacy Club, Girls on the Run, Dance, Mentoring Program, Arts, Sports (other than basketball, soccer, and baseball), and Yoga. Ideas for new activities are also welcome.
Supporting students in classroom by tutoring and any other supports. After school programs to design and run programs. Hours: after school program 2:45 – 5:30pm. Classroom support, 8:15 – 2:45pm.
Big Brothers/Big Sister: reading and supervising activities with small groups of primary grade students. Flexible hours during the school day, 8:30 – 2:30pm.

Mission of Organization: Elementary education, K-8.
Needs: Volunteers to assist with reading support and to enrich students with special talents, particularly for young students.
Fair Haven Union High School - Fair Haven, VT
Needs: Tutors in all subjects (especially foreign languages) and mentors to work with students after school.
Foundation for Excellent Schools - Westminster Station, VT
Mission of Organization: A national non-profit school improvement organization based in Vermont and works with local schools to help students take one more step in their education. Many students are first generation college students looking to attend college.
Needs: College students to mentor in elementary schools. Mentoring can be done one on one or in small groups.
Lothrop Elementary School - Lothrop, VT
Needs: Read to and with children, play games, assist in art and phys ed classes, generally assist kindergarten or primary school children in learning tasks. Hours during the school day 7:45am – 2:30 pm, according to the volunteer’s schedule.
A volunteer with knowledge of chess basics to assist with a before-school chess program, which meets for 8-10 weeks.
Volunteers to help drama teacher with an after-school drama program for several weeks each year.
Service Learning Opportunities: Looking for students to provide support in early literacy, math, and general academics in the classroom. There might also be an opportunity for a group to organize and implement a program of non-competitive games on the playground at recess.
Another project would involve helping the school to revamp its website.
Mountain View Community School - Rutland, VT
Needs: Classroom Assistant: Provide classroom support in a small school setting for students in grades K-6. Could include one on one reading and tutoring, help with projects in cooking, sewing, or carpentry. Flexible and available 7:30am – 3:30pm.
Neshobe Elementary School - Brandon, VT
Needs: After School Club: Whatever your skill, share it. Requests have been made for Computer Club, Literature Club, any art or craft. Any day of the week for 3 or 4 sessions after school.
After school SOAR Program: Small group supervision of recreational/sports activities and homework assistance. Mon, Weds, and Fridays 3-5pm.
Volunteers for before school homework support/tutoring, assistance in classrooms, painting and yard work.
Northeast School - Rutland, VT
Needs: After School Program Volunteer: help with children in grades K-2 involved in the after school program, activities include gym games, crafts, board games, reading, and library club. 1 or 2 days per week, 3:15-4:30pm.
Enrichment Program Assistant: Assisting teachers in grades K-2 with enrichment projects in the areas of gardening, cooking, arts, crafts, computers and publishing a school newspaper. Friday afternoons 1:45-2:45.
Teacher for ELF (Environmental Learning for the Future): attending 1 hour monthly training sessions on an environmental lesson, then teaching it in pairs to a class in grades K-2. 1 hour for training and 1 hour for class presentation per month.
Northwest and Pierpoint Primary Schools - Rutland, VT
Needs: Drama Assistant: working with K-2 grade students on presenting a play. 1 hour per week, either Wednesday or Thursday.
Service Learning Opportunities: Book clubs once a week during lunch, where college students would meet with groups of not more than 7 students to read and discuss books.
Poultney Elementary School - Poultney, VT
Mission of Organization: Elementary education: K-6.
Needs: All volunteers must first go through the principal Ray Pentkowski. Volunteers are needed to work with the after school program, which Vicky Vosburgh is the AF Director. Volunteers needed to help in Athletics Department, which Rick Lions is the Director. Volunteers need to help/ tutor in Computers and Science, Tia Hewes is the contact. Poultney High School - Poultney, VT
Mission of Organization: Secondary education: 7-12. Poultney High is committed to providing students with excellent learning opportunities in a safe and caring environment.
Needs: Tutors for 6-8 week SAT preparation program utilizing VSAC software. Tutors would run prep sessions once or twice a week for 1.5 hours after school
Volunteers are needed to help continue student leadership programs and to continue providing opportunities for improving the school climate.
Community Service Learning Assistant: To assist with a large community service learning class, monitoring, evaluating, job shadowing, and class coverage. Prefer college junior or senior. Contact Lynn Silvestro, ext. 239.
Proctor Elementary School - Proctor, VT

Needs: The Tinmouth School seeks volunteers to assist with its After School Program weekdays from 3:00 to 5:30. Needs: Volunteers to serve as tutors in an SAT tutors at local high schools. Tutors would visit schools once or twice a week for 1.5 hours to run preparation sessions for students studying for the SAT using VSAC’s TestGear software.

Mission of Organization: Oriented towards inspiring and enabling young people to realize their full potential. Provides a safe place to learn and grow, mentoring, and other life-enhancing programs.
Needs: Volunteers are needed to work with staff to help young people learn and grow in a safe place. There are many special projects, programs and opportunities available, such as working in the teen center (ages 13-18) assisting with computers, playing games, and monitoring room usage. The Club also offers a number of internships for interested College students. (Background check is needed for individuals who want to volunteer 25 hours or more.) The Club is also looking for basketball referees and coaches on Saturdays. Refereeing is a paid position.
