 Helen Mango
Professor of Chemistry and Geology
General Chemistry
Helen Mango received her B.A. from Williams College and her M.S. and Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. She has been teaching geology and chemistry at Castleton since 1991. Her research interests include the geochemistry of ore deposits, the contamination of groundwater by metals such as uranium and arsenic, and geoscience education. She always includes undergraduates in her research, and often weaves the material directly into her courses. Field trips are an important part of Helen’s courses, from excursions to local outcrops, quarries, wastewater facilities and hydroelectric dams to the bi-annual two-week journey to Costa Rica that she teaches with Spanish professor Ana Maria Alexander. Helen sings with the Irish band Extra Stout, and the a capella group The Spoon Mountain Singers. She has two young daughters who are both already avid rock collectors.
