The official subject heading is “United States--history.”  Browse the subdivisions under the subjects “United States history” (subdivisions are chronological) or “history United States” (subdivisions are alphabetical).  Or try using the subdivision "United States history" under another subject (i.e. search "sports—United States history" as a subject).  Or try an “advanced search:” put “United States--history” as a subject, and put in some keywords from your topic.  For browsing purposes, the call number for United States history is 973.

Newspapers
The New York Times Index 1851-  (REF 070.172 N42).  The New York Times is available on microfilm dating back to 1851.
Lexis Nexis contains full-text of major U.S. and foreign papers.  Coverage for most is from the mid-1980s to the present, but abstracting goes back further.
Vermont Newspapers Index (http://bfprhdindex.uvm.edu) offers a searchable index to the Burlington Free Press and the Rutland Herald from 1984 to the present.
Union List of Vermont Newspapers (http://vtnp.uvm.edu)  VT 071.43 Un313.  This is a searchable index to the newspaper holdings of close to 100 newspaper repositories in Vermont
